The M14 rifle is an American selective fire battle rifle firing 7.62 Г— 51 mm NATO ammunition largely superseded in military use by the M16 rifle.
The M14 remained the primary infantry weapon in Vietnam until replacement by the M16 in 1966–1968.
The M14 is still used as a sniper rifle and/or a designated marksman rifle in many armies, due to its excellent accuracy and effectiveness at long range.

M14 was also designed by John Garand and has it's roots in late World War II tests with M1 Garand which had 20-round M1918 BAR magazine custom attached.
The M14 was too heavy and long for jungle warfare enviroment plus it's heavy 7.62mm ammunition posed problems for controlled full automatic firing and the amount of ammunition individual soldiers could carry to battle.

Marines were using the M14 as the standard rifle in Vietnam in 1966, but I'm not sure how long after they started using the M16.
They knew they would get M14s when sent out to their units, and could see the short-timers across the way with them, but apparently it was decided that there was time to get the regulars trained on a second rifle later.
I have heard of people who stopped in CA for a bit to get some hot-weather training, and see their M16 for the first time, but also a few who went over to VN and then all of sudden are given a new rifle.

But M14 is A LOT better in almost every apparant way to me. It actually feels like something I can use.
My problem with M14 and several of the previous and current nightly builds, are the Form Buttons are incredibly slow to click.
They branched M14 many days ago and put in about a week cleaning it up for release while the tip was still moving forward.
