The M741 was similar to the M113A1, except that the M741 was equipped with an hydraulic suspension lock-out system to stabilize the M163 when firing.
Since the M163 weighed so much more than the M113 APC, flotation cells were fitted to the sides of the vehicle, and a high-displacement trim vane was added to the front.
When the powertrain modifications of the M113A2 APC were introduced to the M163, the carrier vehicle was redesignated as M741A1.

The M113 parentage of the M163 is obvious.
This vehicle lacks the side-mounted flotation cells and high-volume trim vane, but there would be little use for these in the California desert in any case.

The Vulcan aerial defense system of the M163 is a self-propelled variant of the rotary cannon M61 General Dynamics 20mm (Gattlinggun) which was used in the most of the US airforce bases since the sixties.
A long time the mobile light air defense Vulcan was the standard weapon of the US army, which had the only restriction that it could'nt be used for missions at night.
The fate-ill M247 SGT. YORK DIVAD (battalion air defense gunner) was born in the army to take part in necessity of the army of a competition of the mobile kind of air defense systems for replacing the aging systems of the 20mm M163 Vulcan A/A gun and the missile M48 Chaparral.

Over a period of three decades four successive generations of upgraded forward area air defense systems -- from Mauler to Roland to Sgt. York to ADATS -- were all canceled, at a total cost of more than $6.7 billion.
The M247 Sergeant York DIVAD (Division Air Defence gun) was born of the Army's need for a replacement for the ageing M163 20mm Vulcan A/A gun and M48 Chaparral missile systems.
With the Soviet Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter being fitted with the longer range AT-6 SPIRAL Anti-tank missiles and twin barrelled 23mm cannon, and the Mi-28 Havoc nearing deployment, the M163 and M48 systems would be out-classed in a future conflict.

There is some question as to whether the W163 can even be called a separate model from the W154 since the 163 actually refers to the new M163 engine which was also used on the W154 for the 1939 season.
The Duralumin shell presented a low, wide shark-like nose tapering to a more compact tail forming a tight skin over the engine.

The M163 PIVADS (Product Improved Vulcan Air Defense System) mounts a 20mm Vulcan cannon to an M113 chassis.
This vehicle was mainly used during the 70's and 80's, but has now been all but replaced in fron line U.S. combat units with the Avenger platform.
It is doubtful these would be seen on a modern battlefield, but it seems they were included in the game to give U.S. forces a AAA capability without using missiles.

While aircraft losses to Vulcan tracks can only be credited to the IDF/A- the M163 series ADV has 1100 ready rounds and can chew up lightly armored targets by the long bursts of API and HEI rounds with consdierably effectiveness along with reducing trucks, jeeps, and the occasional BTR and BRDM into so much scrap.
The troops start taking fire in a built up area, : a M163 pulls up and with one short (but satisfying) burst can : obliterate the floor or even the specific room the fire was coming : from without nessissarly leveling the whole structure.
Hopefully the loss of the M163 in heavy divisions can be made up with Bradley Stinger vehicles although ideally the 25mm chain gun would have been replaced by a GAU12/U Gat- the gun to pound away a/c at less than 2.5 klicks and the Stingers out to five or six.

When I first saw this conversion listed as a future release I thought, “why bother” there has been two full kits of the M163, Italeri (#269) and Academy (#1360) plus a resin conversion from Verlinden (#518), and I seem to recall someone else having a dabble as well, so this seemed a little wasted.
This is an exceptional conversion, the full interior of the Vulcan turret and interior parts stand this out from the rest of the M163 offerings over the years.
One word of caution, this kit is obviously intended for modellers experienced in working with resin as there are many small parts and the assembly is quite complex especially the turret above and below the top deck but the result would look stunning.
