  Modern Firearms - AR-15 M16 M16A1 M16A2 M16A3 assault rifle
This rifle differed from the M16A1 by having the heavier barrel with faster 1:7 rifling, a different type rear sights (adjustable for both range and windage), round handguards instead of triangular ones, and by replacing the full-auto fire mode with the burst (limited to 3 rounds per trigger pull), to preserve the ammunition.
On the early AR-15 and M16A1 rifles, the handguards were of triangular cross-section, and were made from two non-interchangeable parts.
M203 mount replaces the standard handguards on the rifle and requires a grenade launcher sight to be mounted on the carrying handle.

The M16A1 rifle was the first generation of the M16.
The M16 rifle was created in response the US Air Force’s need in the 1950’s for a lightweight, small-form “survival rifle” for self-defense in the event of a hostile landing.
The M16A1 was the original M16 built to original army specifications, but after extensive use in the field, it quickly became apparent that the design needed to be modified.

 Colt M16A1
The M16A1 started out in the late fifties as the brainchild of aerospace enginee Eugene Stoner, who together with the Fairchild aircraft corporation came up with a series of designs under the division of "Armalite".
The problem with the M16A1 however is that although it really was perfectly adequate, a lot of Americans in particular looked down their noses at it as the cartridge and the sights really weren't up to much past 200m.
The M16A1 is an important milestone in the development of small arms however, and as such will remain an important part of any gun collection.

Major changes include: a switch from full automatic to 3-round burst capability; a heavier barrel; improved sights; new, stronger plastic buttstock, handguard, and pistol grip.
The M16A2 is a further development of the standard U.S. battle rifle since 1967, the M16A1.
The barrel of the M16 was enhanced around 1967 due to an issue with casings jamming in the chamber, and the new version of M16 was named the M16a1.
