M16 rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The second was the M16A2, which entered service in the 1980s and fires the Belgian-designed M855/M856 rounds (adopted at that time as the new 5.56 x 45 mm NATO standard round).
The M16A2, in turn, is currently being supplemented by the M16A4, which incorporates the flattop receiver unit developed for the M4 Carbine.
The M16A3 is a fully-automatic variant of the M16A2, issued primarily within the U.S. Navy.

 Modern Firearms - AR-15 M16 M16A1 M16A2 M16A3 assault rifle
This rifle differed from the M16A1 by having the heavier barrel with faster 1:7 rifling, a different type rear sights (adjustable for both range and windage), round handguards instead of triangular ones, and by replacing the full-auto fire mode with the burst (limited to 3 rounds per trigger pull), to preserve the ammunition.
The M16A2 also featured the spent case deflector - a triangular bulb on the receiver, just behind the ejection port, that allows the gun to be safely fired left-handed.
On the M16A2 and latter rifles, the handguards are of round cross-section, and have two interchangeable upper-lower sections.

 ArniesAirsoft: Tokyo Marui M16A2 Review
Based on the most well known rifle configuration ever (bar the AK47 and its many cousins), the M16 comes in 6 flavours from Marui, from the ultra-compact Car-15, to the famous battle rifles of the Vietnam era, the M16 is the current US army offering for it’s soldiers.
Weighing in at 3.1Kg, the M16A2 is one heavy piece of kit, thankfully because of the abundance of metal parts, such as the barrel, front site, muzzle, bolt, bolt flap, rear sites etc. The weight, coupled with the length of this rifle, (99cm) mean this is not the gun for anyone with a small frame.
Unfortunately a sling on the M16A2 can aggravate the problem, so its best to avoid them unless you install a metal body kit (of which several are available) or the aforementioned systema reinforcer.
