M18 Hellcat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was often given the nickname Hellcat and is recorded as being the fastest tracked armored fighting vehicle during the war, and for a while after that.
While the M18 was capable of high road speeds this attribute was difficult to use successfully in combat and the type's thin armor and vulnerability to fire made crews naturally reluctant to push forward into combat with the heavier German tanks.
It was a turretless variation of the M18 that was used to transport personnel, cargo or as a gun tractor.

 Tanknet -> M18 Hellcat
So, as to the M18: Practical value of 76mm was similar all around to other Allied AT guns in general, low silhouette and high speed mobility made the TD an excellent ambush weapon.
There was a prototype M18 (T88?) with a 105mm howitzer instead of the 76mm at the end of the war, presumably this would have been the infantry support vehicle.
The M18 is not mentioned specifically in their conclusions, but it is clear that the emphasis on mobility which the TD board envisioned, and the M18 epitamized, was born out in battle (at least by these authors' analysis).

Identification: The running gear with torsion bars is similar to the one of the Hellcat (five road-wheels), but the shape of the turret is unique and announced the post-war tanks of the US Army.
In January of 1944, that idea was abandonned and the hull exchanged for the one of a Hellcat (and the prototype renamed T64E1).

The M18 Hellcat was the fastest armored fighting vehicle of World War and had an excellent record in combat even though it had very light armor.
Several Hellcat tank destroyers were preserved in military museums and it is likely that the Techno-wizards found a copy of the original tank destroyer.
One of the key visible external differences between the original version of the Hellcat and the Techno-Wizard version of the tank destroyer is that a much larger 120 mm low recoil cannon is carried in the place of the 76 mm cannon.

The Hellcat is light and fast for a reason, it has very little armour (F2, S0, T0), so don’t expose it to too much enemy fire, remember you can always use its superior speed to pull out of range of enemy weapons.

 Academy Europe M18 Super Hellcat
This kit from Academy Europe of the pilot M18 Super Hellcat is made the same way as the original by combining the hull from the Academy M18 kit #1375 and the turret from the Academy M36 kit #1395 in the one box.
The Academy M18 kit (#1375) has been around for a few years now and includes interior details of forward transmission/gearbox and turret interior with gun breech, turret basket and most of the basic equipment and will build quite easily into a respectable model from the box.
This is very simple conversion combining the M18 and M36 kits to give very different look to the M18 but with only one vehicle produced it doesn’t give you much freedom with the finish unless you want to build a “what if?” type model.

Often called the "Hellcat", the M18 was purpose-designed for the US Army's Tank Destroyer Force unlike the earlier TDs which were based on existing vehicles.
However, units using the M18 were able to achieve good results as the accounts of their actions included in the book relate.

One of the prolific Steve Zaloga's latest titles on US armour is this book on the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, which had the distinction of being the fastest tracked AFV of World War II.
Zaloga pulls no punches in the text, and concludes that the M18 was "a bitter disappointment" in service, although in fairness that is at least partly due to the seriously flawed requirements which led to the design.
A few of the 805th TD Battalion photos and the wonderful shot of an Italian M18 being offloaded onto an M19 tank transporter combo are particularly noteworthy, as is the shot of a Taiwanese M18 turret mounted on an M42 Duster chassis!

 Tanknet > M18 Hellcat
Attacking from the side, on the roll or in ambush with the 76mm Hellcat would seem to offer advantages because of the vehicle itself versus the chassis used to carry the other guns.
Indeed the British 77mm, which was the smaller version of the 17pdr, and only slightly less powerful, had similar barrel length, fired the same size projectile with similar velocity as the U.S. 76mm.
Of course, none of that has to do with the M18 Hellcat, which used the 76mm gun from its introduction through its withdrawal from service.

Cybermodeler Online - Royal Model Diorama Accessories 1/35 M18 Hellcat Mufflers Review
When AFV Club and Academy released their respective kits of the much-awaited M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, neither one of them provided a set of etched metal engine deck screens for their kits.
The reason for the first was probably a guess that it would be too expensive, and for the other, the domestic Korean version of the kit had an electric motor in the rear and thus there was nothing to expose by providing a see-through grille.
The alternatives were to either buy a complete engine kit – most of which would not be seen, or to built it – ditto on visibility, or just get a set of mufflers.

Steve Zaloga has provided an excellent account of the Hellcat’s genesis and development to meet Tank Destroyer Command requirements – and also shows just why those requirements were misconceived and how combat missions were adapted from the official doctrine to make the best use of the Hellcat.
The result was the T70, fast and with an acceptable performance against 1942 German armour, though itself very lightly armoured and too small to be habitable in sustained combat.
Nevertheless it was accepted for production as the M18, with combat trials at the Anzio beachhead using five T70s following that acceptance.
