A 2.5km length of the motorway in the middle of the contract was constructed over poor ground consisting of about 1m of soft clay containing lenses of silt and decomposed vegetation overlying sand.

The M18 is a motorway in Yorkshire, England.
The M18 runs in a north east/south west direction from junction 32 of the M1 motorway to junction 35 of the M62 motorway.
It meets the A1(M) at junction 2 (A1(M) junction 35), known as the Wadworth Interchange, and the M180 motorway at junction 5

 CBRD - Motorway Database - M18
Originally the M18 was a spur from the M1 for traffic heading on to the A1.
It's also surprisingly well-endowed with lanes and motorway connections for such a short and remote route: it is, after all, a shortcut to East Yorkshire from the south and isn't too heavily used.
The slightly strange construction of that section of motorway - short sections built one after the next - meant that it was in a constant state of transition.

 CBRD - Motorway Database - M180
The M180 runs south of the Humber, connecting the wider world (via the M18) to Scunthorpe, the Humber Bridge and beyond.
The end of the motorway in this arbitrary location is inexplicable, though unfortunately no more unusual than, say, the M27 giving up at Portsmouth or the M62 at North Cave.
This is arguably an important strategic route and, despite its emptiness, is more important than a lot of motorways with more important sounding numbers (M10 and M50 are, among others, guilty here).

The motorway is built to dual three-lane standard for most of its duration (aside from a short dual two-lane section past Scunthorpe), and is quite straight and flat.
It is somewhat strange that while the M180 has to make do with a roundabout junction with the M18, its spur has a large, freeflowing trumpet interchange.
