The motorway runs east from M18 motorway near Thorne to the junction of the A15 and A180 roads near Humberside Airport.
The motorway bypass around Brigg was discussed for many years, but the Flixborough explosion gave it more importance, and was built three years later in 1977 as the second section of the motorway.
The motorway is built to dual three-lane standard for most of its duration (aside from a short dual two-lane section past Scunthorpe), and is pretty much straight and flat.

Motorway regulations, which state 70 limit unless signs indicate a lower limit, are superior to those giving the limits for single or dual carriageways.
It was originally intended to extend this motorway to the M25 and also go further north but this was never completed and the motorway was detrunked quite recently it was the A41(M) as there was already an M41 in London.
The A41 bypass was indeed a motorway until 1993 (the A41(M)).

The A180 is one of these so-called "Expressways": A motorway done on the cheap with no hard shoulders.
However, my grandfather, who was a borough engineer, used to take me to see it being built when I was very small and I always wondered why it ended at a mound of earth - he always used to say that it was twenty years too late but I never knew what he meant.
My theory is that it has to do with the Humber Bridge: the M180 ends at the southern end of the A15 Humber Bridge approach, which was diverted along the M180 from junction 4 to 5.

Mr Haigh was driving a cargo of chocolate from the firm's Bardon distribution centre to the York factory.
