I've never seen a M1917 in the hands of a Cavalryman...but it was a second rate arm by US ordnance standards issued to mostly the draftees as an emergency arm...and since all the draftee Cav units were convereted into Arty Units...well you can see where thisa is going.

The M1917 was issued to units formed out of draftees and volunteers, the M1903 continued on in the hands of units made up of the Regular Army, the Reserve, and the National Guard.

The accelerator pedal is on the linkage forward of the brake and clutch pedals, and appears to be rotated 180° toward the front of the vehicle.
A canteen holder is mounted by the gun mount, and a sling seat for the commander is hooked on the mounts on either side of the turret.
The obvious visual difference between the M1917 and M1917A1 is the latter's lengthened engine compartment.

In 1920, authorization was given for the issue of M1917 Scabbards to troops armed with the M1903 Rifle where necessary to complete their equipment, provided M1910 Scabbards were not available; attention being called to the fact that the M1917 Scabbard was interchangeable between the M1905 and the M1917 Bayonets.
In 1924 the M1917 Scabbard was made substitute standard for the M1910 Scabbard for use by the Army in time of war, because it was less difficult to manufacture and considerably cheaper.
The M1917 Scabbard, although developed for the M1917 Bayonet, could be used with the M1905 Bayonet, and there were a number of that type on hand also.

The Collection - US Military Revolvers
This in my opinion supports the theory that this M1917 was rebuilt for WWII by AA and post World War II by Colts.
One of the neat things about these arsenal and manufacturer refurbished revolvers is they participated in both world wars and represent a lot of history.
The Original finish on the Colt M1917 was blued (un-polished), with trigger being fire blued, hammer bright metal and were configured to use the.45 ACP ammo with a moon clip (holds 3 bullets, also allows for extraction).

 First World War.com - Encyclopedia - Browning M1917 Gun
Although chiefly renowned for designing small arms John Moses Browning's M1917 machine gun was adopted by the U.S. government following America's entry into the war in April 1917.
Prior to the armistice tens of thousands of recoil operated, belt fed, water cooled M1917 machine guns were manufactured for use by the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) from 1917.
Weighing some 24kg the Browning 0.30-inch was actually developed in 1910 from late 19th century designs but was not bought by the U.S. Army until 1917; thereafter some 57,000 were manufactured by the end of the war in November 1918.

 MILITARY FIREARMS -- M-1917 REVOLVERS
The "United States Revolver, Caliber.45, M1917" was produced to fill a gap in the availability of the M1911.45 automatic pistol, then the standard U.S. Army pistol.
The M1917 pistols were standard issue for all U.S. forces during World War I and up until World War II.
The Smith & Wesson Model 1917 was adapted from the Second Model.44 Hand Ejector, chambered and re-barreled for.45 ACP and with the cylinder slightly shortened to allow for the half-moon clips.

Modern Firearms - US Rifle M1917 (Enfield Eddystone Winchester Remington 1917 P14)
In general, M1917 rifles (also known as US Enfields) are known as a strong and accurate rifles; many of these were latter sporterized and often rechambered for various hunting cartridges.
M1917 rifles were issued with detachable M1917 knife bayonet and scabbard.
The easiest way to distinguish British P14 and US M1917 rifles is to look at the buttstock: the British rifles have a brass disk set up into the right side of the butt, which carries the regiment number.

Gun and Game Forums - Help Identifying M1917 Action
The P-14 receivers were near the same as the M1917, so close that there were few changes (if any) when the War Department determined that they needed more.30-06 combat rifles for WWI, than Springfield Armory and Rock Island Armory could produce, in 1903 rifles.
The P-14's are hard to find, and it may be better to preserve history, and look for a Mauser or M1917 action that has already been modified beyond restoration, or an already hunter/sporterized rifle.
Many times people take a 1903, 1903A3, P-14, or M1917 rifle that has a value of $350.00 to $1,500.00 and spend $300.00 to $700.00 sporterizing it to their satisfaction and end up with a rifle that has a value of around $150.00 (sometimes even with the scope it is worth no more than $150.00).

The M1917 had a wide cylinder stop (I think theycalled it) at the bottom right rear of the frame's cylinder window because of the large amount of headspace required by the half moon clips they used.
If it was a reworked M1917 previous owner probably had a pretty penny into the rework and it might be entirely worth it but not to a collector.
According to Murphy's booklet, the M1917 serial number range was 149,000 (his estimate) to 305,000 and I believe there were no (or almost no) commercial revolvers (which would have included.455s made for Brits) in that serial number range.

The M1917 was essentially that MG with a Vickers/Maxim type jacket, in appearance that is. The Mechanism was simplified a little, as the Maxim mechanism is prone to jamming if poorly fed, i know this from experience!
The M1919 was basically a M1917 with a air cooled as opposed to a water cooled barrel, the operating system was the same.
Consequently, the water-cooled M1917 was converted to an air-cooled model by surrounding the barrel with a perforated metal jacket.

I dont think the M1917 hmg was used in the squad role too much, afterall the 30 cal mg and the BAR infantry support weapons were far better suited to this role.

I liked the feel of it, but this particular one was more of a gun than a rifle; there didn’t seem to be any rifling to speak of in the forward one-third of the barrel.
Since everything looked sound, and since the M1917 has a reputation for having a very strong action, I decided to take the rifle to a local indoor range for test firing.
The range fee of five dollars seemed much more attractive than paying $40 or more to have a gunsmith gauge whether or not the thing was safe to fire.

Johnson Automatics is probably most famous for their M1941 Johnson rifle but they also manufactured replacement barrels for U.S. M1917 rifles among other things.
Around World War I, the U.S. military began to receive M1903 rifles from both Springfield and Rock Island, and a few parts (most often the stocks) had a small RI on the tip to indicate manufacture at Rock Island.
When the M1917 "Enfield" was adopted, there were serious concerns about parts being fully interchangeable, and the predecessor British Pattern 1914 rifles were officially considered to be three distinct variations and not fully interchangeable, thus the practice began of marking the maker initials on nearly every part.
