Motorways and HQDCs - Northern Ireland Roads Site
Our motorway system was constructed largely between 1962, when the first part of the M1 opened, and 1975 when the Sandyknowes-Templepatrick portion of the M2 opened.
With the exception of the M1, all motorway schemes were left unfinished when funds were diverted to fund security for the civil disorder that dogged the province in the last 30 years of the 20th century.
These are fully grade separated roads, and may be of motorway standard in every way but name.

The Hills M2 Motorway extends 21 kilometres from the intersection of Epping Road and Pittwater Road, North Ryde to Old Windsor Road, Baulkham Hills.
The motorway was funded and built by the private sector which will operate, maintain and repair the motorway until 2042, when it will revert to the ownership of the NSW government.
The M2 opened on 26 May 1997 and consists of a four-lane expressway plus a two-lane busway (between the east-bound and west-bound carriageways) from Beecroft Road to Old Windsor Road, breakdown lanes and cyclist lanes.

 M2 - Hills Motorway
The Hills Motorway (usually known as the M2) is Sydney's newest freeway, opening in May 1997.
That is not to say that the M2 is a failure - it is an immensely useful road, and quite a beautiful road as well.
Travellers on the M2 have the option of either paying in cash, or using a T-Pass - a transponder which is affixed to the front of your car and is linked to your account.

The Motorway Archive. M2, The Medway Towns By-Pass
The Motorway Archive celebrates the engineering achievement involved in the conception, planning, design and construction of this transport network by thousands of dedicated professionals.
It is a 25 mile long stretch of motorway designed to by-pass A2 where the latter ran through the Medway Towns.
It was of course a by-pass to the Medway Towns, which used to suffer badly from severe traffic congestion and the relief was immediate and apparent, but there is little doubt that to promote the road now through what is quite pleasant countryside would provoke considerable opposition.

The slowing of the proposed rate of motorway construction as agreed between Prime Ministers, Sir Alec Douglas-Home and Terence ONeill led to a review of the order in which the sections of the M2 should be constructed.
In 1965 Russell proposed and it was agreed that the link between the Urban Motorway Ring and the M2 at Greencastle should be along the foreshore east of the railway line which ran between Belfast's Midland Station and Carrickfergus and Larne.
Through the Fortwilliam interchange the motorway is of dual 4 lane construction with emergency hard shoulders on both sides of the carriageway.

Cyclists will be banned on the M2 westbound from Delhi Road to Beecroft Road from the end of January 2007.
On Friday 12 January 2007, Bike North was contacted by Transurban (the company that owns the Motorway) advising that they were converting the cycle lane/breakdown lane into a third traffic lane with no more than two weeks notice and zero consultation.
Cyclists, who "for safety reasons will not be able to use this 5 km westbound section of the motorway" have been offered an extremely poor alternative route using existing roads and paths.

It joins the M2 at junction 4 and is the start of the main route to Larne harbour, one of Northern Ireland’s two main ports.

What I want to know is if all NI motorways are built the same as the A8(M), of a width that can be marked as two or three lanes, as needed (this example is two lanes one way and three the other, sort of).
