Topic: M20 motorway

The Motorway Archive. M20. London to Folkestone and A20 to Dover
The Contractor's chosen alternative construction for the motorway carriageways was for composite construction of 510 mm depth.
The motorway line crossed two valleys and cut through a hill in between, with maximum cut height of 25 feet and maximum fill height of the order of 50 feet.
When the motorway was finally opened all the way from Swanley to Folkestone the expected 80/20 traffic split between it and A2/M2 did not, it is understood, materialise but is nearer to 50/50.

 M20 motorway - Definition, explanation
When the motorway was extended westwards towards London in the 1970s, it was renamed M20 and the A2020 reverted back to A20.
In the early 1990s the stretch of M20 around Maidstone and the junctions there were revamped to allow for more traffic and to ease congestion, as this was a busy stretch of road.
Since the opening of the Channel Tunnel the road between junctions 11 and 12 are occassionally used for the implementation of Operation Stack, should the ferrys or Channel Tunnel stop running.

Proposed Re-Numbering of Northern Ireland Motorway and Junction Numbers - Northern Ireland Roads Site
Given the fact that the M3 was built to urban motorway standard with reduced hard shoulders and tighter curves, and given that some motorways in Britain have no hard shoulders at all, there is no real argument against doing this with the Westlink.
The motorways either in existance or being planned in the Republic of Ireland are the M1, M3, M4, M6, M7, M8, M9, M11 and M50.
The M3 motorway could be extended onto the Sydenham Bypass when it is upgraded in a few years' time with junction 3 for the new Harbour Estate interchange, 4 for the City Airport and 5 for Tillysburn.

When Phase1 of Operation Stack is put in place, the M20 coast bound carriageway is closed from Junction 11, Stanford, to Junction 12, Folkestone, and heavy goods vehicles heading to the ports are "stacked" on the M20.
Using the QMB will stop this as it provides a contraflow on the London bound carriageway and allows all motorway traffic to remain on the road rather than be diverted onto the A20.
We are also investigating increasing the capacity of Phase 1 and the deployment of the QMB on M20 junctions 10-11 as an alternative to Operation Stack Phase 2 which uses M20 junctions 8-9.

Proposals to limit the environmental pollution from motorways included reduced speed limits in built up areas, adequately maintained balancing ponds, the use of ‘hairy leafed’ trees to trap pollutants and resurfacing to limit noise pollution.
