M203 grenade launcher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
M203 generally refers to the United States Army designation for a single shot 40 mm grenade launcher that attaches to the M16 assault rifle or the M4 Carbine.
The M203 was introduced to U.S. military forces during the early 1970s, and replaced the older M79 grenade launcher and conceptually similar Colt XM148 design.
The 40 mm grenades used in the M203 (40 x 46 mm) are not the same as in the Mk 19 grenade launcher (40 x 53 mm), which are fired at a higher velocity.

Colt’s M203 Grenade Launcher is a lightweight, single-shot, breech-loaded 40mm weapon designed especially for attachment to the M4 Carbine and the M16A2/A4 Rifle.
The most commonly used ammunition for the M203 is the M406 antipersonnel round, which has a lethal radius of five meters, and the M433 multi-purpose round which, in addition to having fragmentation effects, will penetrate up to 3 in.
The barrel, which is also made of a high strength aluminum alloy, slides forward in the receiver to accept a round of ammunition, and slides rearward to automatically lock in the closed position, ready to fire.

Mounted under the M16A2 or M4A1, the single-shot M203 fires 40mm grenades with a devastating blast radius.
Because the grenades activate mid-flight, the M203 is most effective at engaging medium- to long-range targets.
Instead, use the grenades to suppress the enemy and keep their heads down while the rest of the team advances or performs its mission.

 M79 grenade launcher
The M79 grenade launcher is a single-shot, break-open, shoulder-fired weapon.
Designed to close the gap between the maximum range of a hand grenade and the minimum range of a mortar, the lightweight M79 fired a 40-mm high-explosive fragmentation projectile to a range of approximately 400 meters.
By 1969 the new M79 grenade launcher was supplanted by the even newer M203 grenade launcher attached to the M16 rifle—adding three pounds to its weight.

I was never made aware of the official explanation of why the grenade went off, however, with most of the weapon system destroyed, and the round expended, it must have been difficult to determine an exact cause.

"BLOOPER" THE M-79 GRENADE LAUNCHER:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The M-406 40mm HE grenades fired from the M79 traveled at a muzzle velocity of 75 meters per second, and contained enough explosive within a steel casing that upon impact with the target would produce over 300 fragments at 1,524 meters per second within a lethal radius of up to 5 meters (?).
Stabilised in flight by the spin imparted on it by the rifled barrel the grenade rotated at 3,700rpm, this in turn after 15 meters(?) of flight armed the grenade.
Later in the war the M79 was superseded by the M203 40mm launcher which was fixed beneath the foregrip of the M16 rifle.

On shooting the launcher one must push a release lever on the side of the unit to allow the slide to go forward, next a Charged Shell of some nature (Many available as I listed in the previous category) insert the shell, and bring the slide back locking the launcher and arming it.
When the Launcher itself is actually discharged the result will depend on what type of shell you chose to purchase with it.
As far as the M203 itself, the launcher is very well made and the combination of the M68 Thunder Grenades and a NERF Vortex is deadly against a tank.

Outgunned by rifle grenades "up close" on the battlefield   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The enemy has always had rifle grenades, after WWII added Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) that can be carried loaded in their reusable-launchers which have distinct firing grips at-the-ready and fired as soon as you stop to aim.
The rifle grenade can be practiced on in training using blanks and practice rifle grenades to achieve a high level of accuracy at a very low-cost, that means EVERY Soldier can be proficient with their use...
The problem is the M203 is ineffective versus an enemy with rifle grenades (Vietnam), and in the hands of a dedicated Grenadier is often pinned down and unable to fire (Punta Paitilla).

i haven't held one since the start of the year, but you just hold the m203 as the other bloke said, but there's a little pressure button somewhere at the back i think which you push, the cylinder slides forward to let the shell out, and there's a trigger at the back of the m203.
I've seen guys at the range who would fire the M203 with the right hand on the pistol grip and left hand on the magazine with M203 trigger or right hand on the magazine with the M203 trigger and left hand on the M203 barrel.
The balance is different with the M203 on and something I never got used to was the fact that my left hand on the m203 is lower than the right hand on the pistol grip.
