With ten years of use, several new barrels and approximately 75,000 rounds through them, the rifles have performed well beyond the expectations of those involved with the system’s development, in particular given that the rifles are used for training and undergo significant stresses.
Depending upon the caliber of the rifle on which the scope is mounted, the shooter selects the appropriate cam, sights in the rifle, and then can dial in the range on the BDC (though, of course, the shooter must still take into account altitude, humidity, temperature, etc., as they affect bullet drop).
The downsides to 5-R rifling are the greater than normal metallic fouling of the bore during the break-in period, and greater difficulty in barrel production, resulting in a more expensive barrel.

Background: Originally developed by the 10th Special Forces Group at Ft. Devens, the M25 was built as a joint services system, meeting the needs of both Army SF and Navy SEAL sniper teams for a semi-automatic sniper rifle built on the same lines as the match grade M14 and M21 semi-automatic rifles.
The M25 is not a replacement for existing bolt-action rifles, such as the Army's M24 and the Marine Corps' M40A3, but rather the M25 is intended to serve as a sniper support weapon for the sniper team observer.
In addition, the M25 will fill a mission specific role as an urban area sniper rifle, where ranges are limited and high rate of fire is the primary concern.

 Rifle selection - choosing between AR-10 or M1A
As for the continuing debate with the M1A v.M25....Having worked with the "old" M-21 system for many years there is one problem and that is having to "tilt and push" the magazine into the weapon.
The real M21, (one of which I'm a proud owner), is the military sniper rifle that the Army issued.
Keep the M1A as is and use it as a training aid to shoot NRA Highpower.
