The US M224 does a good job filling both the light patrol mortar and the company level mortar role, but I don't see a useful purpose having these at the Bn level, they just don't have the range to cover the area assigned to a Bn these days.

The entire purpose of a mortar is to provide high trajectory fire in order to clear obstacles such as hills, buildings, etc. A direct fire or line-of-sight weapon is in a completely different category.
The 60mm mortar was a smoothbore BTW, and fired standard 60mm rounds like the infantry mortars.
Besides, one 60mm airburst precisely over the heads of a group of RPG fanatics will be all it takes to end that quickly.

it seem to be a mortar its about 14 1/2 inches long.
I'm not an expert on ordnance, but I suspect that what you have is an empty shell casing from a 76mm gun.
