Topic: M23 motorway

M23 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M23 motorway is a motorway in England.
The motorway was constructed between 1972 and 1975 contemporaneously with the first southern section of the M25 from Godstone to Reigate (M25 junctions 6 to 8).
The M23 was planned as a means of relieving congestion on the A23 through Streatham, Thornton Heath, Purley and Coulsdon in south London and was originally intended to terminate in Streatham Vale at a junction with the London Ringways Plan's Ringway 2 (the intended replacement of the South Circular Road (A205)).

M25 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The motorway was widened to ten lanes between junctions 12 and 14, and twelve lanes between junctions 14 and 15, in November 2005.
While this is more a structural than a logical issue, at junction 5 near Sevenoaks continuing around the M25 requires the driver to follow the slip roads, as the anticlockwise carriageway continues as the M26 to the east (towards the M20) and the clockwise as the A21 towards the south coast.
The distance of the motorway from central London (taken as Charing Cross) varies from approximately 12 miles (20 km) near Potters Bar to 20 miles (32 km) near Byfleet.

The Motorway Archive. M23, London to Pease Pottage and Gatwick Spur
The line of the motorway between Pease Pottage in West Sussex and Mitcham in the London Borough of Merton was fixed in 1968.
The motorway could not just be allowed to terminate without having some way of dealing with and distributing the traffic from it.
Included in the Hooley to Pease Pottage section of M23 is one of the few 4-level motorway to motorway junctions where it connects with M25.

 CBRD - Histories - The M23
The motorway plan was simple - build a new one to bypass the A23 running from south London to the far side of Crawley, from where the A23 should be clearer, and do for the south what the M1 had done in the north.
The M23 may only exist in a half of its intended length from London to Crawley, but the northern section was, at one stage, definite, and it has left an imprint on south London (better shown up in the aerial photo).
The northern terminus of the M23 is an even bigger tribute to the failed project: empty flyovers cross a diverted A23, and the M23 suddenly drops to two lanes before piling all its traffic onto what should be slip roads and subsequently having to merge with the A23.

The M23 motorway is a major road in England.
The motorway runs from London to Crawley in West Sussex.
Originally, it was planned to start the motorway from inner London, but difficulties over finding an acceptable route have led to its northern end lying just south of Coulsdon, in Surrey.

 History of Northern Ireland Motorways
The motorway was to be partly elevated and partly depressed to minimise noise and demolition.
At this point, the M11, M2, M22, M23, M3 and M4 schemes are all halted due to lack of funds leaving the Antrim to Ballymena section of the M2 missing, a state that is still the case in 2005.
The Belfast Urban Motorway is subjected to a new enquiry due to the degree of opposition to the scheme.

The M23 is only a part of what it was meant to be - evidenced by its first junction being number 7.

Southbound on the A23, this sign represents the beginning of a motorway that was going to be so important that ministers toyed with calling it the M2 for a while.
