The PKM which is 7.62x54mm and the 7.62x51 mm M240 are the East and West's foremost machine guns respectively, both with good reliability and hitting power.
M240 has better optics and other "aftermarket" plus ups, but that's not the weapon in and of itself.
NEver seen an M240 with a clip on box- that honour goes to FN's other machine gun, the M249 SAW aks Minimi.

I'd like an M249, for old times sake, but I've got ideas running around making the M240 fit the Squad Auto role, and I'm thinking getting an airsoft one to try out various ideas is cheaper than a class III for $75,000.
Sure, you can get a deactivaed FN MAG58 or M240 and put some aeg internals in it.
An M240B with a London Bridge bag underneath adn some other junk would be cool, but I'm thinking I don't have enough green for it.

As for the difference between the 249 and the 240, the M240 is a general purpose machine gun, firing 7.62MM NATO ammuntion.
The M249 SAW (squad automatic weapon) is a light machinegun intended for use at the squad level, which fires the 5.56mm bullet (same as the M16) and can alternately accept 100 or 200 round belts, or with a modification by a screwdriver, can also accept AR-15/M16 mags.
