The Marine Corps is replacing the M60E3 with the M240G.
The M240G Machine Gun is the ground version of the original M240/M240E1, 7.62mm medium class weapon designed as a coaxial/pintle mounted machine gun for tanks and light armored vehicles.
The M240G is modified for ground use by the installation of an "infantry modification kit," comprised of a flash suppressor, front sight, carrying handle for the barrel, a buttstock, infantry length pistol grip, bipod, and rear sight assembly.

I have to admit it sounds crazy, but I have a story for you that explains why you should leave your M249 and M240G machine guns on fire, even with rounds on the feed tray.
(Because the M240G is made by the same manufacturer and similar in design and function, the inconsistency also applies to it.
The two machine guns are designed differently from the M-16 in that they shouldn’t be placed on safe when the bolt is forward (see condition 3 and 4).

The army has the M240B (or is replacing the M60E1 in the active duty, the Rangers and the SF had M240G back when the Marines adopted it, but they upgraded to the Bs), it has heat shields and is a little heavier.
and i would say that the M240G is not to big to be use as a SAW, we use the M60 for a long time as a SAW till the U.S. Military got the M249 in 1983, and the M60 is 23.05lb and the M240G is 23lb so it's about the same.
That is M240B not a M240G, the B has the heat shields around the barrel to avoid burns.
