Probably the biggest problems with the SAW are its' unreliability when using 30-round magazines or a BFA (Blank Firing Adapter) that isn't properly fitted.
Other problem I've seen is a maintenance/troop discipline issue: the SAW comes with a spare barrel, which in units I've been in, was rarely if ever actually used-you just simply never fired enough rounds during a training event to require changing it out.
I carried a saw in the national guard for three years until I became a team leader and squad leader.

You probably saw a SOPMOD kit, or the Short SAW used by SOF with the collapsable stock, or a combination of both.
That's the M240, it fires 7.62mm, unlike the SAW that fires 5.56mm.

Most of the failiures from the m249 is because of their age - most are more thna 10 years old.
The other issue that comes with the SAW is good fire control by the team leader and squad leader, achieved by issuing fire commands.
THe SAW has a 200 rd box and the 60 had cardbosrd boxes of 100 linked that set in a cloth bag that hung on the side of the feed tray.

The M249 was made as a replacement the Browning Automatic Rifle, which brings up another important point and flaw in the logic of calling a 60 a SAW.
However it became clear after fielding that the M249 was not sufficient(although a great weapon that I have carried) in a supporting role due to the lack of power contained in the 5.56mm round.
The "SAW" moniker still attached itself to the M249 in the minds of squad members and is even now still used frequently to describe the M249AR(despite severe tounge lashings from CATM instructors when we utter the term).
