M26 Pershing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Heavy Tank M26 Pershing was an American tank used during World War II and the Korean War.
The M26 also saw service in the Korean War, although few armored units were sent because the initial response from battlefield commanders was "Korea isn't good tank country." The official US Army history states a number of M26s were pulled from pedestals at Fort Knox, where they had been WWII memorials.
The Pershing and its derivative M46 were the only American tanks employed in Korea that were better armed than the North Korean T-34/85 (but not the only ones in the UN forces) and were credited with almost half of T-34s destroyed by the US Armored Corps.

Although not standardized until March 1945, Pershings had been sent to the European Theater of Operations as T26E3s with the Zebra Mission in January 1945 (along with equipment including pilot models of the 155mm GMC M40 and 8" HMC M43).
M26 was armed with the same 90mm gun as the M36 tank destroyer, and the GAF engine in the M26 was essentially the GAA of the medium tank M4A3 redesigned to present a lower height, even though M26 weighed almost 26,000lbs (12,000kg) more than M4A3.
The drive sprocket of the M26 was mounted below the level of the track's upper run, and the engine exhaust escaped through an opening in the hull rear plate.

The M26 Pershing, despite a controversial gestation, is one of the most important AFVs in military history, because every American postwar tank up to and including the M60 series can directly trace its lineage to the M26.
This photo of the restored M26 on interior display at Fort Knox (there are at least half a dozen on display throughout the base) shows some variations in the castings around the machine gun; the texture of the armour is particularly prominent.
Early M26s (including the one in the outside photographs) have a rounded housing in the center of the bow for a 400 cfm (cubic foot per minute) rotoclone blower, with a pair of auxiliary periscopes in the hull roof for the driver and assistant driver immediately outboard of the blower.

Review: Tamiya 1/16th scale radio controlled M26 Pershing tank
The Pershing comes with quite a lot of solid metal bearings; they go in the road wheel and support roller assemblies, so that nowhere is an all-plastic wheel riding directly on a metal axle and slowly wearing away.
Most of the Pershing's parts come, as is normal for static and R/C scale models, on "trees" of sprue (not the tropical disease).
While the Pershing isn't immune to drive system damage caused by foolish blundering through coarse gravel or thickets of sticks, if you drive it with care, there's not much in the way of garden terrain that it won't be able to conquer.

In 1950 in Korea the Pershing was reclassified as M26 medium and did well against the T-34/85 employed by the North Koreans.

Both Pershing miniatures from Tamiya and DML are great kits in their own rights - with the newer Tamiya kit sharper and possessing greater detail that the earlier DML releases as one would expect.
Tamiya's M26 Pershing model kit is also missing the fender brace turnbuckles added to the series later after initial deployment to help keep the thin sheet metal fenders from drooping down and fouling the tracks.

This is a nice kit, but considering DML has had its excellent kits out there for several years now (and re-released them to coincide with the release of this kit) it may not sell as well as hoped.
