The Motorway Archive. M27, The South Coast Motorway and A3(M)
The M27 was developed from the long-standing route for a new South Coast Road established in the late 1930s, when a new dual carriageway route with at grade junctions was identified by the County Surveyor of Hampshire and used for development control purposes.
To the east of M27 the six mile length of A3(M) from Horndean to Bedhampton takes the route of A3 out of the built-up areas between Horndean and Cosham and was presumably designated as motorway because at that time (1976) it was assumed it would be connecting directly to the M27 motorway.
The curvature of the motorway restricted the length of individual conveyor units as they could not be located outside the boundary of M27 (as RRL had assumed in their studies).

 Pathetic Motorways: M275
The Laing's section of the M27 out past Funtley and on to Southampton was made up of shrinking concrete sections that grooved under the weight of trucks and made a horrendous noise.
They were designed to keep the road noise from the motorway at a minimum, unless you were unfortunate enough to have to live in them.
The motorway was going to extend down the wide centre reservation of the Mile End Road on an elevated section (similar to M4 / A4 in London) before coming to earth in Fratton.

However, the M27 and M271 formed a bypass of Totton for the A36 (the A36 going into Southampton in those days), and Totton is larger than Copythorne (Village on the A31).
The A36(M) lost its M in the early nineties I believe when the A326 (Fawley to Totton dual carriageway), extension from the A35 to the M27 Jct2 was built and the A36(M) ceased to just be a motorway spur.
The A326 extension stopped lorries from the Esso refinery at Fawley having to jam up the A35 on their way to another pathetic motorway the M271 at Redbridge Roundabout It had to be downgraded to allow the Fawley traffic access to the A36.

 Whiteley Information
The town enjoys only one primary route in and out (via the M27 Junction 9 roundabout), although a controversial secondary route through a residential area is often used by local traffic.
The construction of further transport links to surrounding major routes are restricted by issues surrounding land acquisition (anticipated by compulsory purchase) and associated costs.
Consequently, during rush hour, much traffic congestion is experienced on and around the M27 Junction 9 roundabout, although this has been largely alleviated by the introduction of well designed traffic controls.
