VLBA Measures Galaxy's Motion in Space
While scientists have been measuring the motion of galaxies directly toward or away from Earth for decades, this is the first time that the transverse motion (called proper motion by astronomers) has been measured for a galaxy that is not a satellite of our own Milky Way Galaxy.
M33 is a satellite of the larger galaxy M31, the well-known Andromeda Galaxy that is the most distant object visible to the naked eye.
In addition to measuring the motion of M33 as a whole, the astronomers also were able to make a direct measurement of the spiral galaxy's rotation.

 M33
M33 was probably first found by Hodierna before 1654 (perhaps together with open cluster NGC 752) and independently rediscovered by Messier in 1764.
Investigations of Cepheids in M33 of 1991 (W.L. Freedman, C.D. Wilson, and B.F. Madore, ApJ 372:455-470, May 10, 1991) have revealed that M33 is at a slightly greater distance from us than the Andromeda Galaxy M31.
M33 is also a most rewarding target for the astrophotographer, who can track down its spiral arms and brighter nebulae with considerably inexpensive equipment.

Universe Today - Spitzer Shows the Pinwheel Nebula
M33 is 50,000 light years across and nearly perfectly face on, so you can see right to its centre - a place obscured by gas and dust in our own Milky Way.
In studying the Pinwheel Galaxy, also known as Messier 33 (M33), they seek not malicious gossip but new knowledge as they search for clues to how galaxies like our own are born, live, and die.
"M33 is a gigantic laboratory where you can watch dust being created in novae and supernovae, being distributed in the winds of giant stars, and being reborn in new stars," said University of Minnesota researcher and lead author Elisha Polomski.

Astronomers Measure Slowest Motion Across The Sky
By studying two regions of maser activity in the spiral galaxy M33, astronomers have measured the slowest ever motion across the plane of the sky.
Although its speed through space is large, M33 is so distant that it appears to move at the glacial pace of only 30 micro-arcseconds per year, 100 times slower than a snail on Mars as seen from Earth.
While scientists have been measuring the motion of galaxies directly toward or away from Earth for decades, this is the first time that the transverse motion (called proper motion by astronomers) has been measured for a galaxy that is not a nearby satellite of the Milky Way.

M33 is a large, almost face-on spiral galaxy about 2.5 million light years distant in the northern constellation of Triangulum.
Though the total light M33 galaxy is that of a star of magnitude 5.3, its large diameter makes it hard to see.
However, despite its low surface brightness, this galaxy was among the first to be identified as a 'spiral nebula' by Lord Rosse in the 1840s.
