The M36 was built on the petrol engine M10A1 vehicle hulls which remained stateside for training while the diesel M10 saw extensive service in NW Europe and elsewhere.
Armed with a M3 90mm gun the M36 used a newly designed turret with large rear overhang counterweight to balance the extra weight of the 90mm gun with the initial vehicles issued without a muzzle brake and a thread protector fitted to the muzzle before the later introduction of the large M26 style muzzle brake.
Other versions were the M36B1 with the M36 turret on the M4A3 hull and from early 1945 the M36B2 using surplus M10 hulls as the supply of the M10A1 hulls ran out, but these didn’t see action during WWII but were used extensively in Korea and right up to the 90’s in Bosnia.

With the advent of heavy German armor such as the Panther and Tiger, the standard U.S. tank destroyer, the thinly armored M10 Wolverine was rapidly becoming obsolete, because its main armament, a 76 mm anti-tank gun, was not powerful enough to engage these new tanks.
The M36, based on the M10A1 chassis, was the result.
Besides the large increase in firepower, the M36 also had a better engine and frontal armor that was twice as thick as the M10.

The M36 started as a simple attempt to mount the latest 90mm anti-tank gun on the existing M10 chassis.
Eventually the M36 used the M10A1 chassis, M36B1 used the Sherman M4A3 and M36B2 used the diesel-powered M10 chassis.
Often used as a tank the M36 was eventually fitted with a folding hard-top to the turret to provide better crew protection..

The M36 had a large bustle on the turret rear that acted both as a counterweight to the 90mm gun as well as holding eleven 90mm ready rounds.
The gun shield on the M36 was rounded, compared to the more pointed appearance of the M10's gun shield.
The M36B1 was constructed by mating the 90mm M36 gun turret with the hull of the late-production M4A3 Sherman.

The M36 Jackson was introduced into the European theater in late 1944 to answer one of the main limitations of the M10 - armor piercing firepower.
Two other versions of the M36 were fielded, the M36B1 that was really an M36 turret on an M4A3 chassis, and the M36B2 which was an M36 turret mounted on a reconditioned M10 chassis.
The M36 shares many components with the earlier M10, and fittingly the folks at Academy were able to replace a few parts trees in the M10 kit and replace the turret in order to render the M36 Jackson.

Another thread recommended FH lower the players position so he is still exposed inside the turret but is not exposed to fire from outside the vehicle that is not higher than the vehicle.
Many of the Jacksons shipped to Europe were of the later design (In many photos, you can see the caps on the barrel that cover the threads where the muzzle brake was supposed to be attached), but for some reason, the muzzle brakes were not included in the factory.
It is not clear whether or not the muzzle brake was ever used in WWII--some Jacksons may have been completely outfitted, and some field modification kits may have been shipped to Europe, but it is not clear if they were every used.

As the kit is based on the earlier M10 kits, you can build either the gasoline powered M36 (built on the M10A1 hull with the larger engine deck grill) or the M36B2 with diesel engine (based on the M10 hull with the smaller grill) using the appropriate engine deck parts in the box.
While the instruction booklet points out different choices in parts during the assembly, you need to first consult the paint and decal page to determine which of the versions you are going to build.
The third M36 variant, the M36B1, used this turret on a standard M4A3 hull (as presented in Italeri's old kit).
