One of the stretches through which the motorway was likely to pass but which called for sensitive treatment was the section in the Cherwell Valley south of Banbury.
In order to carry the motorway across the flood meadows of the Cherwell near Kings Sutton, on Banbury Bypass Contract 3, Tarmac (now Carrilion Construction) used a ground improvement system known as vibropiling to strengthen the poor ground before building the embankment.
R M Douglas built the new bridge to carry the motorway's northbound carriageway; 1,000 cubic metres of concrete were poured in one continuous operation lasting 15 hours to form the deck of this bridge.

The M40 was to be the last major Motorway construction in the UK however during the final stages of construction the Conservative goverment of the time announced a major new road building sheme which included new motorway around the M23 in Hampshire.
The fact that the M40 led from London to Oxford and the M11 from London to Cambridge led to a famous sketch in one episode of the BBC's sitcom Yes, Minister.

This motorway connects the eastern end of this dual carriageway with the existing M40 at Stokenchurch, being the final section of a 50km length of the M40 and completing the provision of a dual carriageway road from London to Oxford.

In the late 1980's and early 1990's it became the last big construction project when it was eventually extended to hit the M42 at Birmingham, to take strain off the M1/M6 route.
Until very recently there were no services on the M40, meaning a drive from Folkestone to Birmingham could be done (M20, M26, M25, M40, M42) without passing one service area.
But the M40 reached Oxford almost a decade before the M11 got as far as Cambridge.
