Recoilless rifle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A recoilless rifle (RCL) is a lightweight form of anti-tank weaponry.
Recoilless rifles are capable of firing artillery-type shells at a range and velocity comparable to that of a normal light cannon, although they are typically used to fire larger shells at lower velocities and ranges.
M40 recoilless rifle 106 mm recoilless rifles of US manufacture, mounted on jeeps or similar small vehicles, are very common in the armies of many poorer countries, where they serve in the role of tank destroyers.

Ontos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It mounted six M40 106 mm recoilless rifles as its main armament, which could be fired in rapid succession against single targets to guarantee a kill.
The US Marines were the only force to use the Ontos operationally, and although their crews consistently reported excellent results against infantry during the Vietnam War, the Ontos was always considered an "ugly duckling" and was removed from service in 1969.
In 1960 there was a brief study made to replace the Ontos's 106 mm rifles with a new 105 mm design that included a re-loading system similar to that on a revolver.

Facts about recoilless rifle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The first recoilless rifles (RCL) were developed near the end of World War II as a lightweight form of anti-tank weaponry.
The recoilless rifle functions somewhat like a rocket launcher in that its projectile is propelled with a rocket charge that vents at the rear of the weapon.
They generally have a rifling band preformed to engage the rifled launch tube, and the "case" area of the shell is perforated to vent the propellant gases to the rear.

The recoilless rifle functions somewhat like a rocket launcher in that its projectile is propelled with a charge that vents at the rear of the weapon but it does not continue to burn after it has left the weapon as it does with with rockets.
The first recoilless rifle to enter service was the Panzerabwehrwerfer 7,5 (or PAW), a 75 mm gun developed to give German airborne troops some useful anti-tank support before the Panzerfaust became widespread.
Lightweight 73 mm recoilless rifles are still in service in the Russian army in airborne units, and Soviet B11 82 mm heavy recoilless rifles are found quite commonly around the world in the inventories of former Soviet client states, where it is usually used as an antitank gun.

 RECOILLESS RIFLE
The recoilless rifle combined a rocket propelled munition with a rifled barrel (unlike the smooth bore bazooka) firing a spin-stabilized round with anti-tank capability.
The M18 and M18A1 recoilless rifle were developed late in World War II for use like a bazooka as an anti-tank or anti-personnel weapon.
The 90 mm recoilless rifle, M67, was a lightweight, portable, crew-served weapon intended primarily as an antitank or antipersonnel weapon designed to be fired from the ground using the bipod, monopod, or metal frame shoulder stock.

 M27 105mm Recoilless Rifle
Recoilless rifles are capable of firing artillery-type shells at velocities, and with an accuracy, comparable to those of standard guns, but almost entirely without recoil.
This rifle, a 105mm weapon, proved to be lacking in accuracy as well as reliability and was soon put out of service.
Soon, the M27 was redesigned as the M40 and, to avoid confusion and to also prevent use of the M27 ammunition still in stocks in the new weapon, the M40 was classified as a "106mm" weapon.

Designed largely as an antitank weapon, the M40 was developed during the Korean War as the T170E1 and standardized in 1953.
While the M40 is now outclassed by guided missiles, it is nevertheless cheap and effective and is in service with many armies around the world.
In Philippine service, the M40 is used to take out bunkers, fortifications or even whole buildings if required - a task to which it is very well suited.

The RT-20 was developed in the Croatia in the mid-1990s as a pure anti-materiel and anti-armor rifle.
It is one of the most powerful anti-materiel rifles fielded by any army in the world today - the only others design roughly comparable to this monster in the terms of the caliber and effectiveness are the South-African NTW-20 rifle and the Finnish Helenius APH-20 (will be posted at this site later).
The shoulder rest and the pistol handle with trigger are located under the barrel, so rifle is obviously a bullpup.

Based on pictures I have seen of ammo dumps and caches, there must be plenty of RPGs, at least more than a few recoilless rifles and other sundry bomb hurlers throwers that might be pressed into immediate service.
Modern versions have a conical backside, and I was wondering what the interface between the straight and conical sections look like (ie, is there any "stub" of straight cylindrical tubing protruding into the conical part, or does it just flow smoothly from one to the other?).
Also, I'd be interested in details of the M40 106mm recoilless rifle, particularly around the breech.
