  Messier Object 42
The Orion Nebula M42 is the brightest diffuse nebula in the sky, and one of the brightest deepsky objects at all.
In September 1880, M42 was the first nebula to be successfully photographed, by Henry Draper.
M42 itself is apparently a very turbulent cloud of gas and dust, full of interesting details, which Charles Robert O'Dell has compared to the rich topography of the Grand Canyon in his HST photo caption.

  M42 - Great Orion Nebula
Approximately 1,500 light years distant, M42 is a very active and turbulent cloud of gas and dust and an important star forming region of particular interest to astronomers.
M42 has a particularly complex range of of emission sources as part of it's spectrum, as well as a strong component of reflected broadband light, which probably accounts for the wide range of visible colours.
M42 is so bright that it is not necessary to stack as many as 4 images to bring out faint detail.

 CBRD - Motorway Database - M42
The M42 is there to connect the east and west Midlands (and therefore traffic going longer distances between the north east and south west) without the hassle of the A38, which was the previous route and which dumped all through traffic into the heart of Birmingham.
Construction was started to extend the road, and the M42 today begins at the M5, running across the south of Birmingham to hit the even more recent M40, then turns north to skirt the east side of Brum, taking in its original section and then crossing the M6 and heading on to Tamworth.
As the M42 progresses north, at junction 9 three lanes drop to two, and seven miles later we reach the A444 at Measham.

Screw Mount (M42) Adapters   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
So, for example, if one wants to use the M42 lens on Nikon body (registration distance = 46.5mm) and keep the correct infinity focus, the adaptor must have an optical element, because the registration distance of Nikon is larger than the registration distance of M42.
On the other hand, the M42 adaptor to pentax K (registration distance = 45.5) does not need an optical element but the K mount needs to be wider than M42 so the lens and the adaptor together will fit.
Note that in most of the cases the M42 lens needs to be stopped down before taking picture as most of the adaptors do not provide automatic diaphragm option.

The Helios-40, was originally designed for use with oscilloscopes but later it was found to a good lens for use with 35mm format cameras too This lens behaves just like the old fast portrait lenses- soft and fuzzy at full aperture, and becoming sharper as the lens is stopped down.
So if one is not already supplied with the lens you will have to buy an additional M39-M42 adapter ring to be able to fit this lens onto your M42 mount camera or your non-M42 mount SLR fitted with an M42 adapter.
