M42 Tamworth (Water Orton) Section   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Water Orton Contract of the Tamworth Section of the M42 Birmingham-Nottingham Motorway is the lynch pin in the strategic route linking the M5 and M1 Motorways announced as long ago as 1968.
As a result of that review, significant changes to the design were recommended by the Consulting Engineer including the reduction of height to the main embankment by up to 3m, Following acceptance by the Department, Ove Arup and Partners were instructed to revise the design and prepare new contract drawings and documents.
The Tamworth Section of the M42 runs to the North East of the City of Birmingham connecting with the M6 at a new interchange near Coleshill.

Road Traffic Technology - M42 Active Traffic Management Scheme, Birmingham, UK
The UK Highways Agency is currently implementing an Active Traffic Management (ATM) system as a pilot scheme over the 17km stretch between junctions 3a and 7 of the M42 (28% of the traffic leaves the M42 at junction 7 to join the M6).
This test-bed section of the M42 has extremely variable traffic flows, as it functions as part of a cross-country north-east to south-west route; an orbital route for Birmingham; and an access road to Birmingham Airport, the NEC, and business parks and residential areas.
The UK Government has pledged £180 billion over ten years as part of its 'Transport 2010' strategy to modernise transport infrastructure in the UK with spending on public transport, rail and roads.

 German Helmet
In the UK, the M42 helmet is often referred to as the M43.
The M42 helmet is identical to the M40 in all respects except for the fact that the base edge of the helmet DOES NOT have a rolled edge.
The M42 helmet was painted in a variety of dark green, rough or sand textured colors to reduce the helmet's glare in the field.

A series of regional projects will be among those highlighted by the Department for Transport this week and originally the M42 was to be included.
But the plans for the motorway could be delayed due to cost implications.

 Messier Object 42
The Orion Nebula M42 is the brightest diffuse nebula in the sky, and one of the brightest deepsky objects at all.
Like the main nebula M42, this is an emission nebula, shining by the light emitted from its atoms, after being excited by the high-energy radiation of massive, very hot young stars within it.
M42 itself is apparently a very turbulent cloud of gas and dust, full of interesting details, which Charles Robert O'Dell has compared to the rich topography of the Grand Canyon in his HST photo caption.

 CBRD - Motorway Database - M42
The M42 is there to connect the east and west Midlands (and therefore traffic going longer distances between the north east and south west) without the hassle of the A38, which was the previous route and which dumped all through traffic into the heart of Birmingham.
Construction was started to extend the road, and the M42 today begins at the M5, running across the south of Birmingham to hit the even more recent M40, then turns north to skirt the east side of Brum, taking in its original section and then crossing the M6 and heading on to Tamworth.
As the M42 progresses north, at junction 9 three lanes drop to two, and seven miles later we reach the A444 at Measham.

Greenbelt Development   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Widening of M42 from 6 lanes to 10 lanes between junctions 3A and 7 and to 8 lanes between 3A and 3
Widening of the M42 to ten lanes from Junction 3a to 7 is back on the regional agenda and it’s important that opponents of the widening make their voices heard.
Widening the M42 through the Meriden Gap would clearly damage the Green Belt but Friends of the Earth is not even convinced a widened M42 would solve the transport problems its supporters are concerned about.

Advanced Driving UK :: The M42, West Midlands.
If I understand this correctly, this M42 scheme though is also inconjunction with use of the hard shoulder during congestion.
I travel this section of the M42 every day and find the biggest problem to be actually reading every sign - some of which are only a couple of hundred yards apart, the difficulty being that the limit seems to change at ever sign.
For instance, this morning (northbound) it went 50, 50, 50, 40, 60, 50,----40, 40 so you have to be particulary attentive and not just follow the rest of the trafic flow if you're to avoid breaking the limit.

As for these images great work Steve, glad things finally improved for you,the moon shot is very crisp indeed, but my favorite amongst these three has to be M42.
Ironically, the shot I most wanted was the M45 one as I have several taken with my 80mm short tube Refractor but these have too much chromatic aberration and I was looking forward to using my 80mm APO to combat that - unfortunately, the conditions were just not right
M42 is an obvious target but I love it - surely one of the most beautiful DSOs that an amateur can gain reasonable access to.
