		I had to make sure m4a files were checked, other wise MM ignores them during the Add/scan.
		I found that MM didn't understand the album or artist tags in the M4a (or perhaps they weren't encoded properly) so I had to re-encode those tags for every album.

		The "stsd" section of an m4a file seems to typically contain a "mp4a" section that appears to have information concerning the average bitrate and stuff like that.
		In the meantime, if your goal is just to be able to share your m4a files (encoded from CDs or what not) with Windows machines, just rename them mp4 and play them from Windows Quicktime 6.1 (or, of course, extract the AIFF from them on the mac).
		Leaving it as an m4a file means that it is in a completely open format with which you can do anything you want (except put it on kazza - hymn leaves your iTMS identity intact within the file's meta data).

		Yeah, I have a few m4a files from my "iTunes days." Kept them as they are and just play them in WMP10 using the method I mentioned above.
		look for an app called "hymn" to remove the DRM from the m4a files, then as long as your player supports the playback you wont need to convert to the inferior mp3 format.
		WMP10 can play non-DRM protected AAC (m4a) files.

		I found that if you use the iTunes rightclick option (options are different when preferences are changed) to convert the m4a to AAC, the result is a smaller file with “(Cou.m4a” on the end.
		Nero showtime cannot play M4A as iit is primarily designed for wma which of course is microsofts music format and therefore uncompatible with apples software
		If I were to just leave them on the HD, m4a files are fine.
