M54 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M54 motorway is a major road in the United Kingdom also known as the Telford motorway.
The motorway runs nineteen miles west from its junction 10A on the M6 motorway just south of Cannock, north of Wolverhampton and through Telford, till junction 7 upon which motorway regulations end and it seamlessly becomes the A5, which heads into North Wales via Shrewsbury and Oswestry.
The motorway began life in 1975 as the Wellington bypass built with a concrete road surface replaced around 2000 with standard fltop tarmac.

M6 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is often claimed to be the busiest motorway in the country, although the M25 may also lay claim to this dubious distinction, depending on the measurement used.
The first section of the motorway, and indeed the first motorway in the country, the Preston by-pass, was opened by the then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on December 5, 1958.
The proposal is to widen the road from a 3 to a 4 lane dual carriageway between junction 11a and junction 19.

M25 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The motorway was widened to ten lanes between junctions 12 and 14, and twelve lanes between junctions 14 and 15, in November 2005.
While this is more a structural than a logical issue, at junction 5 near Sevenoaks continuing around the M25 requires the driver to follow the slip roads, as the anticlockwise carriageway continues as the M26 to the east (towards the M20) and the clockwise as the A21 towards the south coast.
The distance of the motorway from central London (taken as Charing Cross) varies from approximately 12 miles (20 km) near Potters Bar to 20 miles (32 km) near Byfleet.

The Motorway Archive celebrates the engineering achievement involved in the conception, planning, design and construction of this transport network by thousands of dedicated professionals.

 CBRD - Motorway Database - M54
Telford's very own motorway, connecting it to Wolverhampton and the wider world via the M6 (though only the wider world to the south, since the M6 junction is restricted).
The M54 was granted an extension in the early 1990s, though it would be silly to think an extension of the same road built to the same standard and heading in the same direction (as far as Shrewsbury) would get the same number.
It marked the eastern end of the original three-lane section of M54, and it's still evident on the ground because east of that point the motorway is just two-lane.

Shropshire Routes to Roots | Transport and Communication | From Trackways to Motorways
Major new roads, including bypasses and the M54 motorway, have all helped to shape the county of Shropshire and its transport network.
The motorway was considered essential to the County if Telford, and indeed the rest of Shropshire, were ever to compete commercially with the rest of the West Midlands.
Man-made hills were constructed which, along with the planting of 250,000 new trees, helped to screen the motorway from view and to cut down on the noise level.

We think it's perfectly understandable that someone who may have been banned from driving for 102mph on a clear motorway would feel very deeply offended that a Police Officer, was given no penalty for 159mph.

The M54 is a key physical factor in this location both in transportation and landscape terms and the preferred route of the Western Orbital motorway was also a major determinant of the identification of potential sites during the preparation of the Plan, although this proposal was subsequently withdrawn.
