M56 Scorpion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M56 Scorpion was an American military armoured vehicle.
It was meant to be transported by helicopter or by air drop.
The M56 saw service with U.S. forces in the Vietnam War, where its function (air portable, self-propelled, anti-tank vehicle) was replaced by the troublesome but effective M551 Sheridan.

The M56, also known as SPAT for Self-Propelled Anti-Tank, was designed as an airborne anti-tank gun.
The 90mm gun M54 was ballistically identical to and used the same ammunition as the M36 90mm gun in the M47 tank, and it was fitted with a blast deflector.
The M56 was unarmored, and consisted of little more than a gun mounted on a tracked aluminum alloy carrier.

Scorpion remains are often found in coal deposits that are believed to be of the Carboniferous Period, and no essential structural difference has been discovered between these fossils and existing forms—suggesting that the group has existed without material structural modification for millions of years.
These scorpions were believed to be preceded by others, now occurring in marine Silurian deposits, which apparently lived in the sea and exhibit some anatomical differences marking them off as a group distinct from their Carboniferous and recent descendants and attesting affinity with the still earlier marine Arachnida referred to the group Gigantostraca.

The M56 will operate in support of light and airborne maneuver units by disseminating smoke on the move and from stationary positions to defeat enemy sensors and smart munitions such as tank thermal sights, guided munitions, directed energy weapons, and other systems operating in the visual through far-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Eight M56 Coyotes were fielded to the Chemical School, Ft. McClellan, AL, in May 1997.

As the 1960s neared its end, the M56 saw action in the jungles of Vietnam, serving with the 82d and 173rd Airbornes, the only units to use the M56 in combat.
As history was to show, the M56 was never able to engage enemy armor for the enemy armor was few and far between.
Even the M56 "Scorpion", in one case, had its 90mm gun removed and a pintle mounted M40A1 was put in its place.

In 1948 a requirement was established for a air-portable self-propelled antitank gun that could be utilized by airborne forces.
Following several years of development, the Cadillac Division of General Motors was awarded the contract for the vehicle which became known as the "Scorpion." The first vehicle appeared in 1953 and became a primary piece of equipment for the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.
The Scorpion was operated by a crew of four and was armed with a M54 90mm gun.

Arthur, It didn't offer any protection for the crew at all, except for the driver, everybody else was exposed, which was one of it's problems.
Also, the M56 was a 90mm, and it was too powerful for the chassis, which was just one of the reasons that it also failed.

Thanks to super-grunt, Reed Dyer who alerted us to Hunnicutt's book, Bradley: A History of American Fighting and Support Vehicles a dark secret from the U.S. Army's past has been revealed, a problem that persists to this day.
The M56 Scorpion (see above with a CH-54 Skycrane heavy lift helicopter) was an exposed 90mm gun and the M50 Ontos was a 6 x 106mm recoilless rifles carrier, both assault gun platforms were helicopter transportable for fire support, but how would the infantry move?
Hunnicutt reveals the Ontos came from the 1954 T55 6-man and T56 10-man infantry carriers that bear an eerie resemblance to today's German Wiesel 1 and Wiesel 2 helicopter-transportable TAFVs except being gas-powered.
