M61 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M61 motorway is a major road in England.
It runs from the M60 motorway north west of Manchester, and heads north west past Bolton and Chorley to end at the junction of the M6 and M65 motorways just south of Preston.
Perhaps the most distinguishing section of the M61 is to be found at the southern end at the Worsley Braided Interchange between Junctions 1 and 3.

BBC - Manchester Have Your Say - Braking news: the M60 is slowing down
Motorways at present cannot cope with the demand that is placed on them.
One of the main problems on any motorway is the vast number of cars which seem to hog the middle and fast lane whilst driving at a speed which warrants them being in the slow lane.
I dont use the m60 much but what i do object to is the green cycle lanes which trafford have introduced over the last few years.

As motorway regulations apply, stopping is prohibited except in emergencies, and a 70 mph speed limit applies, giving a rare opportunity to drive legally at 70 mph on a single-carriageway road.
It has been given motorway status because it only leads to a motorway junction, and so cannot be used by traffic barred from motorways, although it is possible to reach the A56 at Stretford along slip roads without joining the main M60.
The M60 is currently being widened between Junctions 5 and 8, which will involve the construction of collector/distributor roads alongside the main carriageway.

 Press Notice, Highways Agency
The 7.4 kilometre section of motorway is to be widened by one lane in each direction and providing a parallel link road between Junction 6 and 8, to reduce congestion on both the motorway and local road network.
This section of motorway is part two lane and part three lane, used by over 90,000 vehicles per day and has been identified as a bottleneck, with severe queuing during peak periods leading to safety concerns.
In addition to widening the motorway, because Junctions 7 and 6 are close together, making it difficult for traffic to negotiate between lanes safely, the existing parallel link road between Junctions 8 and 7 is to be extended to Junction 6.

There's one simple reason really: while the A6144(M) is, as its name suggests, a motorway with its own number and everything, it is a single carriageway road for its entire length.
Except of course that there is: there's two full roundabouts to head back - enough for most spurs to escape motorway restrictions - and the southbound entry onto the M60 has access to the A56 without touching the M60 itself.
Looking east from the footbridge halfway along the motorway (which represents its only experience of grade separation), the road doesn't look much like a motorway.
