The M62 motorway is a west-east trans-Pennine motorway in northern England, connecting the cities of Liverpool and Hull, and passing the cities of Salford, Manchester, Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield.
Concurrently, a section of the motorway was being built between Gildersome and Lofthouse, resulting in the demolition of a significant proportion of the village of Tingley to build the eponymous interchange.
For comparison, the statistics for 1999 were 90,000 and 70,000 respectively, and the 2006 average daily traffic flow for the busiest stretch of motorway in the United Kingdom, the western M25 motorway (that is, between junctions 7 and 23), was 144,000 cars.

As an orbital motorway, it is equivalent to London's M25 motorway, however, unlike its London counterpart, the M60 is a complete circle (in London the stretch over the Thames at Dartford is not a motorway, but the A282).
As part of the project, the A6144(M) motorway, which connected to the M60 at junction 8, was downgraded and lost its motorway status.

The M62 was only transformed into the M63 when the Trans-Pennine motorway scheme was part-completed in the early 1970s since it made better sense for the complete Liverpool-Hull route to take the number of the main A-road and become the M62.
