Topic: M621 motorway

M62 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The motorway is the most important east-west road in northern England.
The building of the M62 between Rochdale and Huddersfield, crossing the Pennines, is considered to have been one the most daring road construction projects to have taken place in England due to the nature of the terrain.
At the highest point of the motorway, the road divides into two to negotiate the hilly terrain, and a farm, built in 1737, is situated in between the two halves.

The motorway is 187 miles (301 km) long and was constructed in stages between the 1950s and 1970s, with a further extension in the late 1990s.
It was the first full-length motorway to be built in the United Kingdom, and was opened on November 2, 1959 between junctions 5 and 18, along with the M10 and M45 spurs.
The first motorway service station in the UK was built at Watford Gap and later immortalised in song by Roy Harper.

When it was first built, it was the South West Urban Motorway, connecting the M62 at Gildersome to the city centre when it hit junction 3.
The M621 now enters from the M62 as it always has done, swerves sharply to avoid the city centre, and heads out to the south.

More historically, many of Yorkshire's great textile giants, such as Benjamin Gott, were born, lived, died and/or were buried in Armley.
As a place to live, Armley is both good and bad - it is convenient (for Leeds city centre, Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax and motorway links) and cheaper than most of Leeds but in parts, is also typical of most run down inner-city areas.
