M65 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M65 motorway is a major road in England.
The Walton Summit motorway is an unofficial name given by to a slip road to the roundabout linking Junction 9 of the M61 and Junction 2 of the M65, to the south-east of Preston.
The M65 is one of the few motorways in England that is not operated and maintained exclusively by the Highways Agency (the British Government body responsible for the motorways and main trunk roads in England).

The M6 motorway is the longest motorway in England and the United Kingdom.
It is often claimed to be the busiest motorway in the country, although the M25 may also lay claim to this dubious distinction, depending on the measurement used.
The first section of the motorway, and indeed the first motorway in the country, the Preston by-pass, was opened by the then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on December 5, 1958.

In consequence, the construction of the motorway necessitated the provision of a number of canal bridges and diversions of the waterway.
From Hyndburn to Hapton, the motorway was to have dual three-lane carriageways.
Where the Canal impinged on the route of the motorway or the approach to the Huncoat interchange, it was necessary to divert the Canal over a length of ¼ of a mile, by the construction of a reinforced concrete trough.

 LMARS - M65
This section brought some major protests, and indeed, given the idea of a connection for the M65 between the M6 and Blackburn was actually scrapped in 1980, it was quite a shock to the environmentalists when it re-appeared in the roads programme in 1992, with construction starting in 1994.
It should be worth noting that the J3-5 section has some of the steepest gradients on the UK motorway network, and that the original plans called for the motorway to plough through central Blackburn (there is still sufficient evidence of this to the east of the town centre!).
Entering the M65 from Junction 1A, which is effectively a spur from the A6, traffic is instantly given warning of Junction 1, which serves the M6, and the A6 (again).

The Motorway Archive. M66 Bury Easterly By-pass
From an interchange with the proposed Yorkshire Branch Road which later, was designated the Lancashire-Yorkshire Motorway M62, the three mile section to a junction with the A58 at Heap Bridge was to be known as the 'Bury Easterly By-pass Southern Section'.
Designed as a motorway in the early 1970's, however, it was to have grade separation, restricted access, and a consequently higher profile, requiring the construction of retaining walls through the estate.
In addition to the provision of noise barriers, where the motorway is close to residential property, a number of buildings received insulation treatment.
