Binary chemical weapon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One example of a binary chemical weapon is the United States Army M687.
In the M687, methylphosphonyl difluoride and a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and isopropyl amine are held in chambers within the weapon, separated by a partition.
When the weapon is fired, acceleration causes the partition to break, and the precursors are mixed by the rotation of the weapon in flight, producing sarin nerve gas.

 M687 155mm Projectile
The M687 155mm projectile and the M21 OPA canister are stored at the Deseret Chemical Depot, Utah, and the Umatilla Chemical Depot, Oregon.
The safe recovery and recycling of the M687 155mm projectile and M21 OPA canister is the responsibility of the Project Manager for Non-Stockpile Chemical Materiel (PM NSCM).
The CWC requires that the United States destroy at least 201,728 of the M687 155mm projectiles within the first two years of the treaty, or by April 29, 1999.

The Henry L. Stimson Center - Non-stockpile---CBW Chronicle, Volume II, Issue 5 (January 1999)
First, the Army must address binary chemical weapons---munitions wherein the two chemicals are stored separately but mixed just prior to release to produce a lethal chemical agent.
The binary arsenal is comprised primarily of M687 155mm projectiles, most of which have been stored at Oregon’s Umatilla Chemical Depot since 1991.
As of 6 January 1999, some 202,000 M687 projectiles had been destroyed at a recycling facility at Nevada’s Hawthorne Army Depot, in compliance with an April 1999 Chemical Weapons Convention deadline.
