  Messier Guide: Early Autumn
M73 is almost certainly just an asterism, a chance alignment of stars, and not a deep-sky object at all.
Viewing M73 through my 178mm scope at 120X, the illusion of nebulosity disappears, but it is still rather hard to resolve the two faintest stars, the upright of the Y, which also happen to be the closest stars to each other.
Many people scorn M73, considering it to be the most inconsequential of all the Messier objects, but I find the Y pattern to be rather attractive.

  physics - M73
M73 (also known as NGC 6994) is a group of four stars very close to each other in the constellation of Aquarius.
The four stars of M73 are all brighter than 12th magnitude, and there are on average 60 such stars in any given square degree of sky.
Knowledge of the spectral type of each star would give a clue as to whether they were born at the same time or not, as would accurate astrometry and determination of the stars' proper motions.

 Messier Object 73
Although M73 is apparently consisted of 4 stars, 3 of them being of about 10th to 11th magnitude (Burnham and Kenneth Glyn Jones give A:10.5, B:10.5, and C:11.0), the fourth (D) being of mag 12.0, it is obviously a true Messier object.
The most recent major investigation of the nature of M73 to now was published by Odenkirchen and Soubiran (2002), who used spectroscopic data obtained with the Elodie spectrograph on the 1.93-meter telescope at the observatory at Haute Provence, France, together with the proper motion data from the Tycho 2 Catalog, based on above-mentioned Hipparcos data.
To the southeast of M73 is a collection of faint galaxies, the brightest of which is IC 1344 at visual mag 13.7; about 1.5deg E and little N is equally faint (13.7 mag) NGC 7010.

Although it is clear from this description that this group was what Messier had observed and measured, some versions of Messier's catalog omit it as an "obscure" object, however John Herschel has included it in his General Catalogue as GC 4617, and J.L.E. Dreyer included it in the NGC catalog as entry number 6994.
What remains to clear up to now, at least to the knowledge of the present author, is the check if the 4 stars in M73, or at least some of them, are physically related.

To this end, 126 F8:F9 RI lines derived from the cross 'M73' (D) x 'SH430' (ND) are being used to develop a genetic linkage map of wild oat and to detect dormancy QTLs.
Germinability of RI line seeds is being determined at temperatures from 5 to 30 C and significant effect of temperature on germinability have been observed.
Using bulked segregant analysis, we have discovered 10 loci linked to dormancy at 15 C. Of these, three 'M73'-derived loci were clustered on linkage group 20, and one locus each from 'SH430' and 'M73' were mapped to linkage groups 12 and 16, respectively.
