  M79 grenade launcher at AllExperts
The M79 was a single-shot, shoulder fired, break-barrel weapon which fired a spherical 40 mm diameter breech-loaded grenade.
Many different ammunition types were produced for the M79 (and subsequently for the M203), outside of the smoke and illumination rounds three main types emerge: Explosive, Close-range, and Non Lethal Crowd Control.
The M79 has been used extensively also for crowd control purposes (but typically not the M203 as most of these types of rounds won't fit the limited space of the breech break mechanism).

 Messier Object 79
Globular cluster M79 was found by Pierre Méchain on October 26, 1780, and reported his discovery to his friend and colleague, Charles Messier, who determined its position and included it in his catalog on December 17, 1780.
M79 is a beautiful globular cluster at a quite unusual location in the sky: Most globulars are grouped around the Galactic center, but this is one of the few which are situated in the other hemisphere, i.e.
Together with M79, three more globular clusters are suspected to have immigrated from the Canis Major Dwarf: NGC 1851, NGC 2298, and NGC 2808.

The M79 was designed as a close support weapon for the infantry, with two weapons being issued to each rifle squad.
the M79 was intended to bridge the gap between the maximum throwing distance of a hand grenade, and the lowest range of supporting mortar fire - between 50 and 300 meters - and thus gave the squad an integral indirect fire weapon.
The M79 was a single shot, shoulder fired, break-barrel weapon which fired a spherical 40mm diameter grenade loaded directly into the breech.

The story of a "Thumper" or "Blooper" (both were unofficial nick-names for M79) began in 1951, when the US Army recognized the need to fill the gap between the maximum range of a had-thrown grenades (about 50 meters) and the minimum range of 60mm mortars (about 400 meters).
The key downside to the M79 was that it required the grenadier to carry an additional personal defense weapon, such as pistol or a submachine gun.

The M79 Grenade Launcher was developed in the late '50s and early 60's for use by the United States Army.
The M79 was found to be very effective in these situations, especially in Vietnam, where its light weight and small size made it very easy to use in the claustrophobic wilderness.
However, the M79's fatal flaw was its single shot capability - this prevented users from being able to continuously bombard the enemy with explosives, and would leave the grenadier vulnerable to attack without a suitable weapon.
