The M8 is a motorway in Scotland and is one of its busiest
The motorway is sixty miles long - excluding a six-mile gap between the Glasgow suburb of Baillieston and Newhouse - and is notorious for the traffic jams associated with its Central Glasgow section.
With the advent of motorway-building beginning in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s, the M8 was planned as one of a core of new motorways, designed to replace the A8 road as a high-capacity alternative for intercity travel.

 Definition of M74 motorway
The motorway runs from Glasgow 53 km (33 miles) south east, where it is arbitrarily renamed the A74(M).
Alongside the motorway are the B-graded roads, the B7076 and B7078.
This has been a subject of much political wrangling, as the Scottish Executive feel that it is not their responsibility as the stretch of road is in England, while the Department of Transport argue that because most of the A74/M74 is in Scotland, it is therefore a Scottish problem.

When the M8 motorway was extended east from the temporary terminus at Whitburn, the southern half of the B7002 road joining East Whitburn and Bathgate was cut, and a new road was built to replace it and to serve a junction on the new motorway.
Where the M8 motorway was opened parallel to the A8, the A8 was again redesignated: The A89 number was already following the original line of the A8 west of Bathgate, so it was natural that this number should be extended east from Bathgate to Newbridge.
The junction with the B792 was also upgraded, from a flat crossroads to a motorway-style grade-separated intersection, and long before it had been decided to build a new M8 motorway on a new line to the south.

 TheGlasgowStory: M8 Motorway
This stretch of the M8 is often referred to as the Monkland Motorway, as it was built on the bed of the Monkland Canal.
The canal was once the most profitable in Scotland, carrying coal, iron, steel, timber and lime from the Coatbridge area to Glasgow, but by 1950 it had been abandoned and presented a health and safety hazard.
When the demand for Glasgow-Edinburgh motorway became overwhelming (the first section opened in 1964), the canal provided a natural route through the east end of the city.
