The M829 is an American first-generation Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized, Discarding Sabot (APFSDS) tank round designed specifically for the 120mm M-256 main gun on the M-1A1 Abrams main battle tank.
This heavy anti-tank round is essentially a dart made of a depleted uranium (DU) alloy which gives it excellent performance against all types of tank armors, with the exception of newer Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA).
The M829A1 (nicknamed the "Silver Bullet" by Operation Desert Storm tank crews) is widely regarded as one of the most effective tank-fired anti-armor weapon in the world, and overwhelmed Iraqi armor during Operation Desert Storm.

The M829 APFSDS-T is a 120mm, armor-piercing, fin stabilized, depleted uranium penetrator, discarding sabot tracer round.
The M829 round is compatible with all standard NATO smoothbore 120mm tank cannons.
A team composed of General Dynamics and ATK was awarded a $39 million contract on December 9, 2004, by Australia to produce 120mm tank ammunition in support of the M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks on order from the United States.

M829 APFSDS-T (Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot-Tracer) 120mm rounds as fired by the M1 Abrams tank are classified and have never been released.
Operating pressures of the M829 series are between 74K psi and 96K psi depending on the particular variant.
The specific armor referenced is not specified, but in the table of ammunition properties the M829 series the performance of the M829A3 was close to twice that of the best tank gun rounds of all other nations.

The M865 propulsion system is the same as the M829 except that the M865 utilizes a single-base solvent type propellant.
In addition, most of the components are reutilized as a unit as opposed to individual components, thus avoiding the cost and effort of assembly.
The number of M829 Cartridges in existence limits the maximum possible number of M865E2 Cartridges that could be produced.

The radiation levels emanating from the assembled M829 cartridge are no different from the 1983 study, and the slightly higher radiation measurements at the surface of the package are a function of the reduced distance between the penetrator and the outer package surfaces.
The M829 replaced the XM827 (the American analog of the German DM 13), which was the initial APFSDS-T round.
It builds on the EA for the previous M829 and M829A1 rounds (see Report Number 18) and concludes with a "Finding of No Significant Impact." This assessment excludes combat uses and fires or other severe and unlikely accidents and the testing modes for armor penetration and accuracy.

 Picatinny: Products
The M829 was the first in a series of 120mm armor piercing cartridges developed at Picatinny.
At the time, the M829 provided the M1A1 tank with the greatest killing potential of any fielded NATO tank.
The M829 is no longer in production but did lead to the development of future rounds (the M829A1, M829A2 and the M829E3).

During Operation Desert Storm, Iraqi fire did not penetrate any DU armor.
In the Abrams tanks, the Army used 105mm (M900) and 120mm (M829 and M829A1) ammunition with DU penetrators, in addition to non-DU rounds such as High Explosive Anti- Tank (HEAT) shells.
Since US tankers do not fire DU rounds in training, the Gulf War was the tankers' first chance to fire the round.
