M96 Subassemblies and History at Impact Guns Home
In developing the M96 Expeditionary(tm) Rifle, the goal was to design a fully modular firearm which could be assembled in a variety of configurations.
The M96 had to be designed to fire from a closed bolt in all configurations to meet legal requirements for ownership by civilians.
The operating rod and recoil spring of the M96 is somewhat similar to that of the SIG 550 or Beretta AR70 (i.e., the recoil spring is wrapped around the operating rod.) The bolt, though multi-lug type of the Stoner/Johnson variety, has been completely redesigned for greater strength.

Like the Stoner 63 before it, the M96 can be configured as a rifle, a carbine, and a top-fed rifle by depending on which parts added to a common receiver.
Both the M96 and AR15 are gas operated which means they use the expanding gasses of the fired cartridge to cycle their actions.
The barrels of the M96 have a gas adjustment which allows the operator to use more or less of the gasses to cycle the firearm.

 The M96 group
The Sc galaxy NGC 3389, which is in the same field and close to M105, is probably a background galaxy, as its redshift corresponds to a receding velocity of 1138 km/sec, whereas the members of the Leo I group have radial velocities of only 449..766 km/sec.
He and his coworkers found 8 Delta Cephei variable stars in the brightest galaxy of the group, M96, and were able to derive its distance from the Cepheid period-luminosity relation: M96 is 231+/-13 times more remote from us than the Large Magellanic Cloud, thus 12.7+/-0.8 Mpc (41+/-2 million light years).
The M96 group may be physically related to the M66 group which is roughly at the same distance and situated rather nearby in the sky.

The only problem at the end of the days firing was a loosening of the grip assembly, which was easily remedied (this was also exhibited on a second test gun that I fired).

In its earliest form it was known as the M96 Expeditionary Rifle which made its debut during the early years of the "assault weapons ban"which was put in place in 1994 by then President Bill Clinton and happily expired on September 13 2004!
The rifle at first glance appears to be largly influenced by the Stoner 63 machine gun system, made famous during the Vietnam War, but is in fact an update of that design to such an extent that only the detachable buttstock is interchangable.
The receiver is constructed of stainless steel sheet metal, precision TIG welded, and forms the modular center piece to this weapon platform. The buttstock, as well as the forearm and pistol grip are made from a sturdy thermo plastic resin and available in a variety of colors (currently:Black, O.D. Green, and Coyote Brown).

The M96 clearly is not meant to be a precision rifle, nor a long-range varminter.

Since the M96 uses pins to hold the upper to the lower (as does the AR), it is possible to have some play.

10/27/2004 2:24:09 PM The "Robinson M96" is nothing but a 9admittedly nice-looking) reproduction of the Stoner 63 infantry Weapon System, designed by Eugene Stoner (who also designed the AR-15/M-16 family of rifles and LMGs) for Armalite division of Fairchild Aircraft in the early 1960s.

 Supernova 1998bu in M96
Supernova 1998bu occurred in M96 on May 9, 1998 and was discovered by Italian amateur astronomer Mirko Villi, one of the maintainers of the International Supernova Network, on CCD image when it was at 13th magnitude, and rapidly brightening to 11.8 mag.
This supernova was the first one the present author (hf) observed with his own eyes, when it appeared almost as bright as the nucleus of M96.
In case of Supernova 1998bu, this may be of particular interest with respect to the cosmic distance scale determination, as supernovae of this type are often regarded as one of the more reliable "standard candles" for determining distances of more remote galaxies, and M96 has a Cepheid distance determined by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The M96 group of galaxies (also known as the Leo I group or simply the M96 group) is a physical group of galaxies in the Leo constellation consisting of Spiral Galaxy M95, Spiral Galaxy M96, Elliptical Galaxy M105, and a number of fainter galaxies.
This group does not contain the Leo I dwarf galaxy, which is actually a member of the Local Group, making the group's alternate name confusing.
