FN MAG GPMG   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The MAG 58 was pitted against the M60E2, M219, German MG3, British L7A2, French AAT NF1 (vehicular version of the AAT 52), Canadian C1 (Browning Model 1919A4 in 7.62mm NATO) and the Soviet PKM.
The normal rate of fire is 750 rpm and this is obtained by setting the regulator on position "1." (Unlike the MAG 58 ground version, the M240's barrel must be removed to change the cyclic rate.) The retracting handle is replaced with a cocking cable and pistol grip trigger mechanism is of an abbreviated configuration.
The MAG should be carried by the sling with the bipod legs extended so that it may be fired from the hip assault position at the instant of contact.

The MAG has a gas regulator for a low rate of fire (~650 rpm) and a high rate of fire (~950).
The MAG is fitted with a quick change barrel, which is changed between every 200 and 400 rounds depending on how intensive the weapon is used.
The MAG is however still used as a coaxial weapon and is in use by the reserve.

M240 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manufactured by Fabrique Nationale subsidiary FN Manufacturing, Inc. Columbia, SC, the M240 (FN MAG) was chosen by the US military after a world-wide search for a weapon to replace the venerable but troubled M60.
The NATO version of the M240 is known as the MAG 58.
The U.S. produced M240 family is produced to the same exacting specifications of the MAG 58 enabling all M240 variants to have interchangeable, interoperable components with foreign-produced NATO equivalent weapons.

It was eventually decided that five magnitudes should represent a change in brightness of a hundred-fold; that is, a mag 2 star should be 100 times brighter than a mag 7 star.
This system means that one can measure fractions of a magnitude (Polaris, for example, is a mag 2.02 star) and that really bright objects can have negative magnitudes (Sirius is mag -1.58, Venus can be as bright as mag -4.4, the Sun is magnitude -26).

Modern Firearms - FN MAG / M240 machinegun
The basic design of the MAG is no more than a time-proven Browning action, taken from the M1918 BAR automatic rifle, turned upside down and adopted for belt feed.
The simple folding bipod is attached to the gas block, and there's a mounting points on the bottom of the receiver to fit into the various mountings, including infantry tripods.
Standard guns are fitted with the pistol grip and trigger, and the wooden (early models) or plastic (present manufacture) butt, coaxial guns (like M240C) have the trigger replaced by the electric solenoid, and the pintle-mounted versions, like the M240D, have the spade grips instead of the pistol grip and the butt.
