MASH (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia MASH is a 1970 satirical American dark comedy film directed by Robert Altman, based extremely loosely on the novel written by Richard Hooker. M.A.S.H. I suppose the operation scenes were included to add seriousness and depth, but all they did really was slow down the movie. The dialogue is intelligent and witty and goes a long way to raising the caliber of what would've been an otherwise mediocre movie.
