The MASH unit was conceived by Michael E. DeBakey and other surgical consultants as the "mobile auxiliary surgical hospital".
The MASH unit made its way into popular culture through the 1968 novel M*A*S*H by Richard Hooker, the 1970 feature film based on the novel, and the long-running television sitcom based on the movie.
In March, 1991, the 159th MASH of the Louisiana Army National Guard operated in Iraq in support of the 3rd Armor Division during Operation Desert Storm.

A letter to TV Guide, in about 1973, written by a former M*A*S*H doctor stated that the most insane jokes and idiotic pranks on the show were the most true to life, including Klinger's crossdressing.
Gary Burghoff (Radar O'Reilly) was one of two M*A*S*H actors to reprise his role from the movie, and the only main character (the other was G. Wood as "General Hammond"), retaining his extraordinary ability to detect the arrival of choppers transporting wounded long before anyone else could hear a thing.

This combining of genres was unusual for television series of its time, and was in fact an early example of what later became known as a dramedy[?].
The show's producers did not even want a laugh track in the show, but this proposal was rejected by CBS; however, as a compromise, the emergency room scenes were shown without a laugh track, and in fact the show was shown in the United Kingdom entirely without the use of canned laughter.

All the action at that first televised baseball game had to be captured by a single camera, and the limitations of early cameras forced actors in dramas to work under impossibly hot lights, wearing fl lipstick and green makeup (the cameras had trouble with the color white).
Television's progress was further slowed by a struggle over wavelength allocations with the new FM radio and a battle over government regulation.
Standard television sets cannot pick up HDTV and will presumably have to be replaced or modified by 2006, when traditional, low-definition television broadcasts are scheduled to end and broadcasters are scheduled to return their original, non-HDTV channel to the government.

Burns was one of the "MASH" regulars when the show began on CBS in September 1972, and his officious, tattletale, whiny personality quickly came to embody the hypocrisy, particularly that of the military, that the show strove to satirize.
Along with other members of the "MASH" cast, he appeared in television commercials for IBM in the late 1980s.
Linville, who is survived by his wife, Deborah, attended a ceremony three years ago in South Korea at the closing of the mobile hospital that inspired the television show and the novel and movie that preceded it.

I must say that this is a great season of M*A*S*H. FX takes a long time to get to each episode and cuts out for time.
I have to say that MASH was never again to be as funny or as dramatically compelling as in the first three seasons.
They succeeded in doing this brilliantly and without the need to get on a soap box all the time, which unfortunately was to become the signature of the later seasons.

Even though I grew up watching the television series, I have to admit that I had never seen the film version of MASH all the way through until recently.
Maybe if I had seen MASH when it originally came out, I would have liked it more.
I'm sure it was quite a radical concept, as it did reflect events from the life of it's screenwriter.
