Enhanced Graphics Adapter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Introduced in 1984 by IBM for its new PC-AT, EGA produced a display of 16 colors at a resolution of up to 640×350 pixels.
The EGA card included a 16 kilobyte ROM to extend the system BIOS for additional graphics functions and included the Motorola MC6845 video address generator.
Each of the 16 colours could be assigned a unique RGB colour code via a palette mechanism in the 640×350 high-resolution mode; EGA let you choose the displayed colours out of a total of 64 palette colours (two bits per pixel for red, green and blue).

It was based around the Motorola MC6845 display controller and had a palette of 16 colors.
The MC6845 as used in the Amstrad CPC
The Amstrad CPC series of 8-bit computers also used the MC6845 and so had a similar set of graphics modes to CGA but with more palette flexibility: 27 colors, of which any combination could be used in every graphic mode avaiable limited only by the available bit depth.

Boisy try this webpage http://www.6502.org/users/andre/petindex/crtctest/internals/diffs.html There is some minor differences between the MC6845, MC6845-1 and the Rockwell 6545 and 6545-1 parts.
One major difference between the MC6845 and the Rockwell 6545 is bit #3 of R8.
Setting this bit to "1" will allow the CPU to access the video ram by writing to the write only registers R18 and R19.

The picoTK HOWTO: The Framebuffer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Historically the controller for getting the data out of the framebuffer and feeding the display is called a cathode ray tube controller (CRTC).
[On the first IBM PCs this has been done using a Motorola MC6845 chip (back then, this chip has been used widely for other display applications as well).
The organization of the framebuffer, that is how the picture information is stored in the memory and accessed by the host CPU depends on the implementation and programming of the CRTC.

(MC6847) The MC6845 is a video address generator first introduced by Motorola and used in the TRS-80 Color Computer among others.
The VIC-II (Video Interface Chip II), specifically known as the MOS Technology 6567/8562/8564 (NTSC versions), 6569/8565/8566 (PAL), is the integrated circuit chip tasked with generating Y/C/ composite video graphics and DRAM refresh signals in the Commodore 64 and C128 home computers.
The Motorola 6845 (commonly MC6845) is a video address generator first introduced by Motorola and used in the CGA and EGA video adapters, Amstrad CPC and BBC Micro.

 PC1512 display notes
Unlike a real CGA, it is not built around a real MC6845 controller, and so attempts to get custom video modes out of it may not work as expected.
Its 640x200 CGA mode can be set up to be a 16-colour mode rather than mono.
This is a write-only port which is used to set the border colour in the 640x200 graphics mode.

CAST& Digital Blocks Announce C6845 Core
POMONA, NEW YORK -- June 8, 1998 -- Intellectual property (IP) provider CAST, Inc. and development partner Digital Blocks today announce a new synthesizable VHDL CAST core: the C6845 CRT Controller for raster-scan CRT displays.
This fully synchronous VHDL core is compatible with Motorola's MC6845 CRT Controller.
For embedded system designers with character and bit-mapped graphics CRT display requirements, the C6845 offers improved product time-to-market, lower product development costs, and reduced risk.

IBM Color Graphics Adapter (CGA) The original CGA was built with discrete logic around an MC6845 display controller.
On the original CGA and some clones accessing the video memory during the active display time caused the display controller to miss some pixels (seen as "snow"), which is the reason many programs only accesses video memory during vertical or horizontal retrace.
Note: this register is only accessible if 3D4h index D8h bit 5 is set.
