Moldea: MCA Music & the Mafia
A series of record and tape counterfeiting operations had led federal investigators to suspect that organized crime figures were worming their way into the lucrative music business, and the presence of several hoods at the convention confirmed their suspicions.
MCA also asked for a meeting with the U.S. attorney's office to register complaints about what it considered to be improper behavior on the part of the prosecutor.
On October 2, 1987 MCA filed a formal complaint against Rudnick "to protest the many unfounded and inflammatory statements (he has made) regarding MCA and its executives and employees." The complaint was forwarded to the department's Office of Professional Responsibility in Washington, which refused to confirm or deny an investigation of Rudnick.

law.com - MCA Records Wins Barbie Battle
The 9th Circuit affirmed a district court's granting of summary judgment in favor of MCA Records, which released "Barbie Girl." The court held that it had not infringed on Mattel Inc.'s Barbie trademark under the federal Lanham Act.
Although the court noted that "MCA used Barbie's name to sell copies of the song," it held the use was noncommercial because the song was social commentary on Barbie's image and the cultural values she represents.
MCA's attorney, Russell Frackman of Los Angeles' Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp, noted that there was a "First Amendment thread throughout the opinion," adding that the court used the legislative history to show that, in passing the dilution act, Congress didn't intend to stifle parodies such as "Barbie Girl."

Plan Could Signal End Of MCA Brand
Sources say the current plan is to eliminate the MCA Records brand and move the majority of the label's staff and some of the roster under the banner of fellow Universal Music Group label Geffen Records.
The reason, according to insiders, is that the MCA brand has become "tarnished" by a history of acquisitions and mergers as well as the label's decline in sales and prestige during the past few years.

TAXI A&R Interview: Mitch Brody, MCA Records
MCA hasn't had the greatest track record in the past five to ten years of breaking new acts, and recently in the last four or five months you guys have gotten a new president, Jay Boberg.
Whereas, if I was to sign a band that had not made their record yet, they might need a couple of months to write, and then they might want to go into the studio in three or four months, and then they might be in the studio for two or three months.
I would say that that's probably the average deal, a one-album deal with maybe six or seven options--the record company's option, not the band's option which tends to be a major point of misunderstanding among artists when they go around telling their friends that they have a seven-album deal.

MCA is notorious for its stinginess and carelessness with its country reissues, preferring to put out budget-line "best-ofs" for major artists that have as few as 8 or 10 cuts(!) Recently Universal has put out a few nice collections, but for the most part the label sticks to the tightwad policy.
Outstanding retrospective of the best "cowboy" singers ever; from their first 1934 recordings with Roy Rogers in the band, to their final Decca sessions in 1954 (when none of the original members were left in the band).
