Common (rapper) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The album was also the last to be produced entirely with Common's long-time production partner, No ID. Following the popularity of this album, Common Sense was sued by a ska band with the same name, and was forced to change his call sign to simply "Common".
The album was critically acclaimed and led to a major label contract with MCA Records.
With ?uestlove, Jay Dee, and DJ Premier producing, 2000's Like Water for Chocolate was almost a breakthrough success and greatly expanded Common's fanbase among critics and listeners.

Plan Could Signal End Of MCA Brand
Sources say the current plan is to eliminate the MCA Records brand and move the majority of the label's staff and some of the roster under the banner of fellow Universal Music Group label Geffen Records.
The reason, according to insiders, is that the MCA brand has become "tarnished" by a history of acquisitions and mergers as well as the label's decline in sales and prestige during the past few years.
MCA (Music Corporation of America) was founded in 1924 by Jules Stein as a Chicago talent agency (Lew Wasserman joined the company in 1936).

Salon.com Politics | Helping Eminem sell records   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Last week, while receiving an MTV Video Music Award for the year's best music clip, rapper Eminem facetiously thanked his critics, noting that every time they complained about his gory lyrics, he sold more records.
Lynne Cheney, the wife of Republican vice presidential nominee Dick Cheney and the former head of the National Endowment for the Humanities, singled the white rapper out for ridicule during her testimony Wednesday before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.
The practice puts the labels and rappers like Eminem, who act defiant on award shows, in the position of self-censoring their work for the more sensitive areas of the country.

Vanity Fair: PRINTABLES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
This was the vocal lead-in to the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight," a 12-inch single that became a freakish commercial phenomenon within weeks of its release on a then unknown independent label, Sugar Hill Records.
The hastily cut deal was made for reasons hastily cut deals usually are: in 1983, MCA Records was struggling and looking for quick fixes, and a brash new management team ignored the niceties of a background check before handing Joe and Sylvia Robinson a check for $2.2 million.
Born as it was of murky circumstances, Sugar Hill's relationship with MCA went on to outstrip any cautionary tale about the fate that can befall an indie label (particularly a fl-owned label) that takes corporate coin.

Beastie Boys (from left) Mike D, Adrock and MCA call for political change on "To the 5 Boroughs," an electronic tour de force.
It's a song of solidarity, too, as the raspy rapper MCA notes: We come together on the subway cars / Diversity unified, whoever you are.
Although dead serious at times, "5 Boroughs" also is marked by a hefty sense of humor, from the loopy "Oh Word" to the daffy "Crawlspace," which bears a strong resemblance to the oddball rappers Phunk Junkeez.

Rap News Network - Skillz Headed To Interscope
After reports surfaced that MCA would be folded into Interscope Records because of MCA's decline in sales over the past years, it seems that the transition is now underway.
Skillz, who is signed to Rawkus, which recently entered into an arrangement with MCA, said that most of the rap acts were destined to leave MCA and that the proposed merger may be beneficial to the artists.
While representives for MCA and Interscope Geffen AandM declined comment, sources stated that the merger would turn Geffen Records back into a major, in hopes of finding the same success the label found in the early 90's with such Nirvana and Guns N' Roses.

On the last track of the Beastie Boys' "To the 5 Boroughs," after the three brash white rappers have dispensed the inevitable "we're-so-crazy" rhymes, shouted out to the city that "blends and mends and tests," and revived '70s ad slogans, there comes a moment of undisguised idealism.
The song is a little empowerment chant called "We Got the." MCA, the rapper Adam Yauch, begins: "If you want it, be the change." Then Mike D takes the spotlight: "Gotta spread love or the world goes..." the last word of his sentence supplied, right on the beat, by the sound a cuckoo clock.
In "Time's" verses, the gruff MCA pulls no punches as he assesses the problem: "We got a president we didn't elect, the Kyoto treaty (on global warming) he decided to neglect." Later, Ad-Roc taunts the commander in chief: "Why you hating people that you never met?

Yet E-Dub (Edward Dixon) was no rookie when his MCA debut, The Prezident, dropped in late 2001; his indie label, Hundred Grand Entertainment, had been pushing his music throughout the underground for years, particularly in his hometown, Detroit, where he was widely known and regarded as an on-the-rise talent.
He worked with several big-name producers for his MCA debut, including Swizz Beatz (DMX, Eve, Busta Rhymes), Scott Storch (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Roots), and KLC (Mystikal, Master P, Destiny's Child), though he went with producer Frankie B.
