Beaufort was chartered in 1711 and is known as the second-oldest city in South Carolina, after Charleston.
Beaufort has been the setting for several novels by native son Pat Conroy, and a popular filming location for major motion pictures, including The Big Chill, The Prince of Tides, The Great Santini, Forrest Gump, Something To Talk About and GI Jane.
Beaufort is the center of an urban cluster with a total population of 46,227 (2000 census), comprised of the city and its surrounding towns and unincorporated areas including Port Royal, Burton, Lady's Island, Shell Point, Laurel Bay, and Parris Island, among others.

MCAS Beaufort hosts all active duty USMC F/A-18 air operations on the East Coast, assigned to MAG-31.
MCAS Beaufort is located four miles from downtown Beaufort, S.C. Managing more than 12,000 acres, the air station includes the Laurel Bay military family housing just outside the main gate and Townsend Bombing Range about 130 miles away in McIntosh County, Ga.

They are as modern as Beaufort is old, and they provide the firepower for the seven "gun" squadrons of Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 31, a unit some experts say is the most heavily committed MAG in the Marine Corps.
Beaufort's Hornet population is expected to grow within the next two years, and the flavor of MCAS, Beaufort will become a bit of an interservice mix when two naval squadrons move from Jacksonville, Fla., as part of the closure of the naval air station at Cecil Field.
The MCAS commander, Col Lawrence Staak, commented, "We're excited at the prospect of becoming a joint services base." He pointed out that the incoming squadrons would not be strangers because they have shared carriers with MAG-31 squadrons for some time.

One day blended into the next, and we kept hearing that the Harriers with their "damned ability to stop dead in mid-air, and turn 90 degrees" was causing the Phantom pilots some serious grief.
It was hot in Beaufort that spring day, and we had stripped down to fatigues and (white) T-shirts, and had our ever present mickey mouse ears (hearing protection) on our head as the day wore on.

The importance of these gains are best explained in the MCAS Beaufort Commanding Officer's environmental protection policy statement: "...We will lead by example, because with the environment, there are no second chances."
