md5crk: new DC project (http://www.md5crk.com) - Topic Ars OpenForum
The aim of MD5CRK is to raise awareness in the IT industry that MD5 is not secure for many applications.
Hopefully this will all be explained better on the md5crk site in the future, but for now, the van Oorschot paper is a good place to start.

While Wang et al's attack was analytical, the size of the hash — 128 bits — is small enough to contemplate a brute force birthday attack.
MD5CRK was a distributed project started in March 2004 with the aim of demonstrating that MD5 is insecure by finding a collision using a brute force attack, although it was ended shortly after Wang et al's announcement.
Because of the discovery of an easy method for generating collisions, many researchers recommend that replacement algorithms, such as SHA-1 or RIPEMD-160, be used instead of MD5.

There are a few other clients that also doesn't run at the lowest priority and I personally avoid all clients that isn't capable of running at the lowest priority and I know there are lots of other people that does the same, especially people with work farms.
A new version of the MD5CRK client has been released (v1.0.5) which has better support for offline clients, install programs for Windows, and the client can now be installed as a service in Windows.
MD5CRK will show empirically that MD5 is cryptographically insecure, and while some uses of MD5 need not be cryptographically secure there are many implementations currently in wide use (most notably signing SSL certificates) that require more than what MD5 offers.

MD5CRK attempted to prove that the MD5 encryption algorithm is insecure by finding a collision: two inputs which can produce the same digest (encryption method).
Researchers in China (not associated with MD5CRK) announced on August 17, 2004 that they found a collision (see their paper) and proved that MD5 can be broken in a matter of hours.
MD5CRK was the first project to enable website owners to configure their web pages to link to a MD5CRK distributed Java applet.

 FX Claim MD5CRK
This claim will be judged True if MD5CRK (www.md5crk.com) finds a collision in the outputs of the MD5 hash algorithm before 1 April 2006.
The price of this claim will therefore track whether the project will be able to live up to that expectation, giving it one month extra.
Judgement will be based on whether or not the MD5CRK project claims to be successful in their effort to find a collision in outputs of the MD5 hash algorithm using distributed computing (or a "Chinese Lottery").

MD5CRK was a distributed project started in March 2004 with the aim of demonstrating that MD5 is practically insecure by finding a collision using a brute force attack.

On the cryptography front, Chinese researchers Xiaoyun Wang, Dengguo Feng, Xuejia Lai, and Hongbo Yu announced this week their discovery [57KB PDF] of a relatively simple method for generating MD5 collisions, demonstrating such collisions for the MD5, MD4, HAVAL-128, and RIPEMD-128 hashing algorithms.
On hearing the news, MD5CRK announced that their project (which had been running for about 6 months and had reached 3,824 Million MD5 transforms per second) would be shut down within 48 hours: thank you, drive through.
