MEPIS was first designed for the purpose of creating Warren's vision of a Linux distribution that did everything he wanted.
MEPIS has gained attention from well known sources including TechTV and Slashdot, and is ranked in the top 5 most popular distributions according to Distrowatch.com.
MEPIS is under the control of MEPIS LLC, while Debian is a community project associated with Software in the Public Interest.

During the installation you pick where you want Mepis to be installed as well as whether and where to install the boot manager (grub.) Finally, one must add an initial user and set the administrator password.
Mepis was almost based solely on the 2.6 kernel but, with the huge array of hardware out there, 2.4 was left on as the default.
Mepis simply reads messages from dmesg and hotplug, parses what is occurring and, based on a text file, does the right thing.

Mepis Linux is a liveCD, debian based distro, with some additional features, which makes it an excellent introduction to debian.
Mepis comes with two cds, only the first is needed though, with the second disk having additional software you can install once you have a hard drive installation.
Mepis is primarily a KDE based distro (although it does come with IceWM) and booted straight to KDM, the KDE login manager, which was set to an ugly default scheme, which is odd as the desktop uses Keramik, so you'd think that KDM would use the same theme.

Mepis offers you two check marks, one to create a boot floppy and one to configure LILO (screenshot NOTE: this screenshot is not quite current - the CD I installed had been updated since the time of the screenshots).
Mepis is a very young distro and of course there will be a few bugs, that's to be expected in any distro.

Mepis comes pre-installed with some amazing software for starters there is Open Office to put it simply it is an office suite that is compatible with Microsoft formats and is by far more powerful and feature rich, while maintaining its ease of use.
For those afraid to install the mepis OS on their machine, they can just boot to the liveCD only and run from the cd; It is still a remarkable thing to behold.

The new MEPIS System Center allows the user to reconfigure network setting, including WiFi; configure the apt (Package Manger) sources configuration; change the system identification; select a differnet default system keyboard and language; clear system logs; adjust the mouse and display configuration of X-windows; and it assists with the installation of application localization packages.
The MEPIS name and logo are restricted marks that may not be reused for commercial purposes without written permission from MEPIS LLC.
MEPIS Linux is intended to be a world class desktop alternative to MS-windows.

 MEPIS founder plots transition to Ubuntu
MEPIS LLC, a long-time Debian Linux distributor, is switching from Debian to Ubuntu as the basis for its SimplyMEPIS Linux distribution.
In the past, MEPIS was one of the leading lights of the DCC Alliance, a group of non-profit and business organizations that had been working on producing a Debian-based core Linux distribution that would also be LSB (Linux Standard Base) 3 compliant.
"MEPIS is no longer involved with the DCC due to 'creative differences.' We wish Progeny, Xandros, and Linspire the best of luck in their mutual endeavors," said Woodford.

The hardware support with Mepis is very good, and the approach to supporting network/internet-disconnected PC's with a second CD provides an alternative to using DVD's for bringing in additional software for installation.
While I have experimented with Knoppix, Gnoppix, Lindows, Morphix, and now Mepis, Mepis and Morphix appear to be my GNU favorites, with Mepix a strong contender for installation in very conservative environments.
Mepis CD's are now a standard in my briefcase, good enough to be given away to the IT challenged.

I later discovered that MEPIS was not what my friend had in mind, and we didn't end up doing the company, but I got the domain names and held on to them, thinking that if I ever started another company, I might want to use that name for the company.

By that I mean it is presently easier to pop in a Mepis Live CD, tell it to install on the HD (which is an amazingly fast process) and then have the system come up with all the expected features and services needed to do day-to-day things.
Other than that, the fact that with Mepis I can — whithout doing anything else to the system other than an install — pop open firefox and browse sites with flash and java not to mention the support for all sorts of audio and video codecs is a big boon and extremely convenient.
I downloaded both the Mepis Live, the hoary kubuntu live (to be fair because I dislike gnome) and the hoary installer.

Once Mepis is running from the CD you have the option of installing it on the hard drive, which took about 20 minutes on one of my prehistoric 266-MHz laptops.
