On May 1, 2004 many EU enthusiasts waving the EU flags found their flags confiscated by police and some were arrested under the clause of "anti-nationalism." At present it remains the poorest country in Europe with rampant corruption and a booming trade in people.

The most recent elections to the European Parliament were the European elections of 2004, held in June of that year.
For instance, in 2004, the number of seats in the European Parliament was temporarily raised to 788 to accommodate representatives from the ten states that joined the EU on 1st May, but it was subsequently reduced to 732 following the elections in June.
In 2007 these observers will become MEPs, but their number is expected to decrease when the number of seats assigned to each country is reassessed, according to the Treaty of Nice.

Under the deal, centre-right MEPs agreed to support Borrell to lead the Parliament for the first half of its term and Socialist MEPs are to return the favour and support a centre-right candidate (probably German MEP Hans-Gert P�ring) for the second half. 
The percentage of female MEPs this term is the highest in Sweden (57.89 per cent), followed by the Netherlands (44.44 per cent), France (43.59 per cent) and Slovenia (42.86 per cent).
