Scientology: From Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion
Through Scientology auditing, engrams may be neutralized and the thetan made increasingly self-aware or "enlightened." By various techniques a practical methodology was developed to enable the initiate to recognize his (or her) spiritual existence, to separate from the MEST body, and to begin to exert mental control over the MEST universe.
Scientology maintains that in his true nature, man (i.e., humanity) is not the limited and pitiful body and ego he mistakenly imagines himself to be.
The basic tenets of Scientology result from an eclectic mixture of Eastern philosophy and the personal research of Hubbard into a variety of disciplines, as well as the "data" uncovered from "auditing." Auditing is Scientology's "counseling" or extensive examination of the present life and "past lives" of the "preclear," or initiate.

Thetans have absolute control over their bodies, but, sadly, they think they are bodies (a terrible fate) and hence are bound by the MEST (matter, energy, space, time) universe.
Thetans thus are no longer free, but are in bondage to the material universe.[8] Scientology claims it can free the thetan.

THE BELIEFS AND TEACHINGS OF SCIENTOLOGY
Each individual person (called a "thetan") is considered to be a "thought unit" of the spiritual universe which interacts with the physical universe (MEST), usually by inhabiting a human body.
Scientology assumes that spirituality and thought (called "theta") is an energy existing in its own universe, separate and distinct from the physical universe of Matter, Energy, Space and Time (MEST), and that spirit (theta) is senior to, and indeed created, the physical universe (MEST).
The Scientology term "thetan" is what has commonly been known as the "spirit" and it is defined in Scientology as the source of life; in the individual, it is recognized as the core of personality or essence of oneself, quite distinct and separate from the physical body or the brain.

For Hubbard, only an unaberrated thetan (i.e., one who by means of Scientology is truly enlightened) knows things as they really are and, apparently, Hubbard was the most enlightened thetan of all.

Scientology's Relationship With Eastern Religious Traditions
The source of the soul's suffering is held to be man's solidarity with the cosmos, his participation in nature (the enturbulation of theta and MEST) [i.e., what Scientology calls the physical universe of matter, energy, space, and time (Hubbard, 1975: 248)] (Wallis, 1976: 112, quoting from Eliade, 1969: 4).
After summarizing Mircea Eliade's description of yoga, Wallis concluded that "impressive similarities are to be found with the theory and practice of Scientology and Dianetics" (Wallis, 1976: 113).

 L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology: An Annotated Bibliographical Survey
Hubbard had a bit of a kink creating new words and artificial composita (words like knowingness, enturbulation, MEST).
For Scientology it is impossible for a very special reason: " Scientologese ".
He also used some words in a very special sense (like his favourite "to handle" which is the one word he could not abstain from employing in his own special way even in his late SF novels).

 About Scientology - EffectiveEvangelism.com
The fact that Hubbard alleges Taoism to be "an ancestor to Scientology" and the scientologist "a first cousin of the Buddhist" notwithstanding, certainly no one had ever heard of ARC breaks, engrams, electropsychometers, pre-Clears, MEST, Operating Thetans, disconnection, and hatting before 1911.
Yet even from a purely objective point of view it occurs to me that there would be problems with the credibility of Scientology on at least two counts.
How can Scientology be considered credible when it insists that it "respects" and "does not conflict with other religions" (text, p435) that clearly conflict with it?
