Normally the metar data is grouped into a number of different files, each corresponding to an hour's worth of data centered on the hour.
MetarMRF will also work properly if all the metar reports for all time steps are combined into one file, although the program will take longer to run since it has to search though this larger list of all the reports in order to extract just those for the current time step.

METAR stands for METeorological Aerodrome Report and is predominantly used by pilots in fulfillment of a part of a pre-flight weather briefing.
A METAR report may also contain information on precipitation amounts, lightning, and other information that would be of interest to pilots and meteorologists.
If the service cannot interpret a data element in the METAR line it will be displayed in the remarks or unknown return strings, so as not to be lost.

METAR means "aviation routine weather report" and is predominantly used by pilots in fullfilment of a part of a pre-flight weather briefing.
It is also used by meteorologists, who use aggregated METAR information to help forecast the weather.
The word METAR is from the French, "message d’observation météorologique régulière pour l’aviation," and is thought to have originated as a contraction from MÉTéorologique ("Weather") Aviation Régulière ("Routine").
